The Associate Engineer, Firmware is responsible for contributing to the development and testing of embedded software and firmware for our BOND IHC & ISH staining platform and related instrument subsystems.
This position reports to the Manager, Firmware Engineering and is part of the Software Engineering Group located in Mount Waverley. This will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Develop and deliver embedded firmware features that power diagnostic instruments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product owners, hardware, systems, and verification) to refine requirements, resolve technical issues, and deliver new features and enhancements.
- Design, develop, and execute firmware tests, including unit, integration, and system-level testing to ensure product performance and reliability.
- Investigate and resolve complex technical issues across hardware–software interfaces, including communication protocols, timing, and instrument behaviour.
- Contribute to engineering documentation (requirements, design, and testing) and support delivery within a regulated medical device environment.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- Foundational understanding of embedded systems concepts, including microcontrollers, interrupts, timing, communication interfaces, and hardware–software interaction.
- Understanding of the software development life cycle, including specification, implementation, integration, testing, and release of firmware/software.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Programming in C, C++ and/or Rust, or scripting languages used for test automation.
- Embedded systems or related domains through coursework or projects (e.g., mechatronics, robotics, electronics, motion control, sensors, or instrument automation).
- Using development tools such as source control, build systems, debugging tools, or laboratory test equipment.
