Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that challenges the curious and hardworking to deliver work that matters. Our extraordinary institution has distinctive areas of excellence and a culture marked by ambition and a deep, practical engagement with challenges facing society. We continue to produce versatile alumni and draw faculty and staff eager to be a part of the university’s creative, dedicated and close-knit community. We place emphasis on practical problem solving, interdisciplinary learning, a transformative spirit, and collaboration.
The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is a vibrant organization for dynamic collaboration. Home to four departments — Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics — MCS also hosts many programs and research centers that cross disciplines.
The MCS communications team is seeking an Associate Director of Research Marketing and Communications. Working under the direction of the college’s Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, the Associate Director of Research Marketing and Communications will play an important role in increasing the visibility of the college through disseminating and communicating news and information internally and externally. • Working closely with subject matter experts to conduct media relations, including identifying and working with University Communications and Marketing to pitch news to national, local and trade media.
  • Leading the creation of the college’s bimonthly Dean’s Dispatch e-newsletter and weekly MCS Minute e-newsletter.
  • Identifying and coordinating visuals for stories, social media and other materials, working in partnership with photographers, videographers and designers.
  • Collaborating with staff across Mellon College of Science, University Communications and Marketing and other academic schools and colleges.
  • Attending and covering events, as needed.
  • Serving as a backup to the Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, when needed.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to work independently and effectively, managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with subject matter experts.
  • Demonstrated understanding of peer-reviewed, scholarly research and how to accurately communicate academic topics to general audiences in an engaging manner.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism or a related field.
  • At least 3–5 years of experience writing or producing videos for communication and marketing channels.
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills.
