University of Miami School of Law has a great opportunity for an Associate Director, Career Services to work at the Coral Gables Campus.
The Associate Director serves as a key member of the Office of Career & Professional Development (OCPD), providing individualized career advising and professional development guidance to School of Law students and recent graduates across a wide range of legal career pathways and practice settings.
Responsibilities
Student Advising and Career Readiness
- Provide ongoing, individualized counseling to students and recent graduates on career planning, job search strategies, and professional development, including self-assessment, career exploration, and goal setting.
- Advise students on application materials, including resumes, cover letters, personal statements, and email communications.
- Conduct mock interviews and provide constructive, individualized feedback.
- Develop and deliver workshops on job search strategies, market trends, and career pathways.
- Closely track students’ employment interests and outcomes, including practice areas and geographic markets, and ensure timely communication of opportunities to students.
- Connect students with alumni and practitioners for mentoring and networking opportunities.
Career Programming & Resources
- Partner with faculty, student organizations, and administrative offices to design and deliver career programming across multiple practice areas, including law firms, business, government, public interest, and judicial clerkships.
- Assist in the creation of job search guides, marketing materials, and other print and electronic resources.
- Support signature events and initiatives that connect students with employers, alumni, and members of the judiciary.
Employer Engagement & Market Expertise
- Build and maintain relationships with legal employers across sectors to support student placement.
- Support employer and student participation in year-round recruiting programs (Early, Fall, and Spring Interview Programs) and job fairs.
- Attend alumni, bar association, and other professional events to cultivate relationships with attorneys and industry professionals.
- Assist in developing new employment opportunities and expanding geographic and practice-area reach.
- Monitor legal hiring trends and market developments to inform advising and programming.
Data Reporting & Administration
- Collect and assist in the accurate reporting of J.D. graduate employment data in compliance with American Bar Association (ABA) and National Association for Law Placement (NALP) requirements.
- Maintain active membership in relevant professional organizations, including the South Florida Association for Law Placement and National Association for Law Placement.
- Contribute to office-wide projects, long-range planning, and strategic initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including supervision of student workers and special projects. Depending on experience and institutional needs, the role may evolve to include expanded responsibilities.
Qualifications
- J.D. required and a minimum of three (3) years of post-graduate legal experience as a licensed attorney.
- Strong understanding of the legal profession and career pathways across multiple sectors.
- Judicial clerkship experience (state or federal) strongly preferred.
- Experience in career advising, recruiting, or mentoring law students preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations in person and virtually.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, alumni, faculty, employers, and members of the judiciary.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated integrity, dependability, sound judgment, equanimity, teambuilding, and resourcefulness in establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships.
