JOB SUMMARY: Assists Automation Engineers in designing production fixtures and automation equipment.  Documents designs and validate that equipment performs as intended.  Fabricates designed parts and assembles system level fixtures for use in test and assembly in the factory.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.)

  • Design, develop, specify, and document manual and semi-automated test and assembly equipment with guidance from management and senior engineers.
  • Design and fabricate production fixtures and automation equipment for manufacturing, test, and design verification.
  • Perform and check routine calculations, specify equipment, and solve problems of low to moderate engineering complexity.
  • Create and update documentation which defines fixtures, including drawings, specifications, BOMs, and CAD databases.
  • Adhere to industry codes and standards as well as department practices and procedures.
  • Design fixturing using machined part design, electronics, and pneumatic circuits.
  • Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Assist with the design, fabrication, and assembly of models and prototypes.
  • Interface with production to troubleshoot and resolve fixturing and automation issues.
  • Obtain quotes for non-production parts.
  • Verify fixture and equipment design requirements by testing and documenting results in a coherent manner.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS

Performs other duties when required that are outside of normal job duties.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or similar discipline and zero to three years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use spreadsheet, database, word processing, and scheduling software.
  • Experience with one or more CAD packages.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with managers, co-workers, vendors, contractors, and customers.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical publications, technical procedures, or other related documents.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with CAM packages and familiarity with FEA software.
  • Experience with multiple CAD packages.
  • Aptitude for research and problem solving.
  • Understanding of mechanical reasoning, physics, electronics, metalworking, and machining.
  • Ability to use 3D printers and CNC mills or routers.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical interference, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, talk, hear, and see.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or reach with hands and arms. The employee will regularly multi-task between projects, be required to move throughout the office building, and effectively communicate.  

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT The environment is fast-paced; time pressured, and requires accuracy. The normal environment is quiet and typical of an open cubical setting with some areas that may be louder at times.
