Job Description

This position directs and coordinates the daily grain handling operations of an export grain facility. Responsibilities include: managing the facility to prepare for upcoming operations, barge and truck operations labor schedules, monitoring the vessel and barge operation timeliness, managing the facility stocks, oversight of Control Room personnel, incoming barge logistics for unload schedule, and assisting the Superintendent with the overall operations of the facility, including safety and maintenance.


Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Determines work priorities; schedules barge and truck unloads/loads to ensure the most beneficial use of labor and facility equipment. Works with commercial traders and Superintendent on a daily basis to set priorities and communicate facility requirements.
  • Acts as liaison/coordinator between General Superintendent, SHE Manager, Maintenance Superintendent, Logistics, and Control Room so that smooth, efficient, and productive communications are created and maintained. Communicates and delegates tasks and directives from the General Superintendent to the Facility Staff.
  • Trains and assists Shift Supervisors in all aspects of facility operations including but not limited to: bin and tank storage in relation to grain quality and overall flow of production relating to Control Room and hourly operators.
  • Monitors grain condition and communicates with the superintendent/traders if certain stocks need to be moved.
  • Monitors vessel loading progress to minimize downtime and ensures that Control Room Supervisors are aware and knowledgeable of best ship loading practices.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Fills in for Shift Supervisors as needed.
  • Acts as Elevator Superintendent when superintendent is absent.
  • Assists in the compliance of safety, corporate, and environmental programs.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of operations projects budgets for the facility.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelors degree preferred.

Experience

Basic qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in the grain industry with increasing responsibility in the areas of mechanical and electrical maintenance, grain handling, and supervision.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Prior grain elevator management experience.
  • Prior logistical management for truck, barge, and vessel.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior vessel loading experience
  • Supervisory experience at an export grain facility
  • Prior experience with vessel load orders and contracts


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are the basic qualifications:

  • Superior knowledge of OSHA, Food Safety, Grain Standards, and Environmental regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change within the work force
  • Demonstrated skills of team building and conflict resolution
  • Effective communication (verbal, written, presentation) skills
  • Broad knowledge of industrial machinery, including preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacement equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of computer operations
  • Thorough understanding of plant operations
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of 175 feet, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires regular bending and lifting

  • Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax/scanner/copy machine, mobile phone, truck/rail scales, bulk material handling equipment, diagnostic equipment, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)


Working Conditions

  • Portions of the day will be spent in a climate-controlled office environment. Portions of the work day will be spent outside with routine visits to operational areas resulting in exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. This may also result in exposure to dust, odors, gases, vapors, wet or slick surfaces and loud noises. Where appropriate, wears personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with Company standards and governmental regulations. Requires wearing safety equipment at times, including safety belts/harnesses and ear, eye, head and respiration protection. The extension of regular working hours is occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or respond to emergencies. Additionally, work may be required on weekends and holidays as dictated by business demands. Occasional travel is required.


Employee Supervision

  • Supervises shift supervisors, hourly operations employees, and Control Room supervisors.
  • Oversees the facility in the Superintendent’s absence
  • Has the authority to recommend hiring, terminating, and discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, and direct work.


Decision Making/Accountability

  • This position will be responsible for decisions affecting day to day operations of the site to ensure efficient, safe and timely completion of objectives in accordance with Company goals and objectives.


Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Is an active member of the facility SHE Program. Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner. Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.
