Description

The Department of Criminal Justice & Sociology at Charleston Southern University invites applications for an Instructor or Assistant Professor of Sociology position beginning 1 January 2027. Charleston Southern University seeks candidates for faculty positions who are professing Christians and who are committed to excellence in teaching and service. They should support the goals of a strong liberal arts education and be willing to explore with students the integration of faith and learning.

Qualifications

 An earned Ph.D. in Sociology is preferred. Applicants who are ABD (all but dissertation) will be considered. Candidates with a master's degree in Sociology or a closely related social science discipline from a regionally accredited institution who have completed at least 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology are also encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, experience teaching in multiple instructional formats (face-to-face and/or online), and demonstrated potential for scholarly and professional engagement appropriate to a teaching-focused university.

 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the ability to teach the following courses: Principles of Sociology, Social Problems, Anthropology, Marriage and The Family and Criminology, and others as developed. Involvement within the department, student advising, campus service and professional development are required. The course load is 12 hours per major semester of undergraduate courses.  Teaching in the summer is available for additional pay; courses are taught both in person and online. The successful candidate will be committed to integrating the Christian faith into his or her teaching and scholarly activities and advancing the Christian mission of the University. Additionally, the successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to student mentoring, academic advising, and active participation in departmental and university life.
