The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) in the College of Education (COE) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Reading: Elementary Education to become part of the teacher education program, graduate programs, and an integral contributor to the scholarly agenda of the department, college, and university.

About Us

The College of Education (COE) at FAU prepares educators (e.g., teacher and school leaders), education professionals (e.g., school counselors, instructional designers), and speech-language pathologists. Florida Atlantic serves six public school districts, among which are two of the largest districts in the nation, Broward and Palm Beach County School Districts. The COE is made up of five academic departments: Counselor Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Research Methodology, and Special Education. The COE offers 37 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and nine certificates. The faculty is comprised of over 80 full-time faculty, instructors, and adjuncts. Faculty maintain robust research and service agendas, contributing to their field of study, the university, local and national communities.

The successful applicant will join the school's dynamic, multidisciplinary programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI). Undergraduate programs include: Elementary Education and Secondary Education with certification and endorsement in Reading and ESOL, and Early Childhood Education. Graduate programs include master’s degrees in: Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education plus Certification, Elementary Education, Environmental Education, Reading Education, Educational Psychology, and Instructional Technology as well an Ed.S. and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Position Summary/ Responsibilities

We seek a colleague in reading, language arts and children’s literature who will enhance, develop and teach core reading courses at the undergraduate and master’s levels across online, hybrid and face to face formats; advise students and supervise field experiences; assist with the preparation and submission of state required reading assessments including gathering, compiling, and organizing data; sustain a robust research agenda commensurate with a Research I institution, in a college that serves dynamic school districts; and engages in institutional and community service as appropriate, including participation on faculty committees and doctoral dissertation committees. The candidate must have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to teach across a variety of platforms (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous, and asynchronous online) and content areas (e.g., theories, issues and practices related to reading and reading education).

This faculty will be expected to:

  • Develop and maintain an active scholarly agenda in reading, language arts, children’s literacy, and related topics
  • Work closely with doctoral students interested in reading, language arts, children’s literacy, and related topics
  • Advise doctoral students and supervise doctoral student research
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate reading courses
  • Counsel teacher education students about career prospects and professional opportunities after earning a university degree and teacher certification or advanced graduate students earning a master’s or doctoral degree
  • Assist with recruitment of new students and retention of current students
  • Assist with preparing reports or responses to teacher preparation and other mandates (e.g., Florida Department of Education candidate completion rates)
  • Promote the mission and goals of the department, college, university, and field
  • Supervise students completing field experiences at various schools and community settings
  • Participate in faculty meetings and department, college, and university committees
  • Work collaboratively and ethically with other faculty, staff, and students
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the field of reading education
  • Maintain and demonstrate competence in teaching, research and professional activities, including participation in professional associations (e.g., International Literacy Association) and community service
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

•Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Reading or Literacy; a minimum of 18 units of graduate coursework in literacy at the time of hire.
•Established record of scholarly work in the field of literacy and active scholarly participation in professional educational organizations.
•Practical teaching experience as a reading instructor at the PK-12 through college or university levels.
•Demonstrated ability to effectively work with students from various backgrounds using innovative instructional approaches and methods.
Desired Qualifications:
The candidate’s research agenda and teaching philosophy should demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the theories of reading, reading development, and reading assessment across a variety of settings and learning contexts. The candidate will be expected to integrate evidenced-based practices to create teaching and learning opportunities that support the development of content and pedagogical knowledge in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, including modeling effective teaching strategies that aid in differentiated instruction at the PK-6 level. The candidate should be knowledgeable about and facilitate students’ critical engagement with current trends in the field, such as the “science of reading,” censorship of children’s literature, reading assessment, and should be aware of programs in use in area schools.
