Position Summary:


The position of Assistant Professor of Legal Writing is a full-time, non-tenured faculty position. Typically, the position requires the teaching of six credits each semester. The classes to be taught include Legal Research and Writing (“LRW”), Advanced Legal Research and Writing (“ALW”), Appellate Advocacy, or other legal writing courses as required.


Responsibilities:


Responsibilities of the position include six hours each week of in-class teaching. In addition to the class time, each faculty member must maintain regular office hours, evaluate in detail student assignments, and hold multiple individual conferences with the students throughout the semester. Faculty members are also expected to be accessible via e-mail for student questions and concerns, and to be responsive to the students’ needs. Each faculty member is also required to grade all assignments, culminating with a final grade for the course and the final grades must comply with the applicable curve.e.


Faculty members work collegially in preparing the course materials for major research and writing projects every semester, with the initial planning, drafting, and editing of such course materials assigned on a rotation basis. The curriculum and content of each course are derived from an established department-wide syllabi and each faculty member is expected to adhere to the course syllabi closely, especially regarding the due dates of major assignments.


In addition to teaching, a faculty member will have other administrative responsibilities including attending the College of Law faculty meetings, required University meetings, and the College of Law graduation ceremony. Legal Writing faculty also serve on law school committees, as designated by the Dean.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications:

  • Applicants for this position must have a Juris Doctorate from an ABA- accredited law school, an excellent academic record, superior oral and written communication skills, and at least three years of prior experience as a practicing attorney or a judicial law clerk.
  • Prior experience in teaching legal writing is highly desirable.
