MAIN FUNCTIONS: The Assistant Nurse Manager has twenty four-hour accountabilities for the operational management of the Operating Room. Implicit in this statement is indicated managerial responsibility for the supervision, direction and support of the nursing staff in that unit to meet the needs of the Patient/Unit/Hospital.
REPORTS TO: Director of OR, VP Patient Care Services, System VP of Perioperative Services.
SUPERVISES: All unit staff; RNs, LPNs, ORTs, O.R. Assistants, O.R. Specialty Coordinators, Secretary/OR Material Managers, Schedulers, and other personnel
CONTACTS: Physicians, Administration, Department Head, Hospital Staff, Patients, Families, Visitors and Vendors, OR Materials Manager and other hospital staff.
- Improves service and productivity within the Surgical Services.
- Identifies issues or potential issues; suggests, works with staff and participates in developing solutions, re-evaluates and revises plans.
- Improves service and productivity within the Surgical Services.
- Encourages and promotes shared governance teams.
- Interprets the philosophy, goals, policies, procedures and patient satisfaction surveys to the staff
- Participates in clinical activities as required and facilitates the moving of surgical cases in order to avoid divert and ensure efficient services.
- Promotes, develops and supports customer oriented service and exemplary public relations.
- Serves as a resource to the Surgical service and hospital.
- Promotes working relationships with administration,physicians and other departments.
- Makes certain that staff appropriately charges for supplies used.
- Monitors Press Ganey survey and interprets reports.
- Directs clinical nursing rounds to assure positive Press Ganey Reports.
- Reviews and revises the Performance Improvement plan for the unit annually
- Accepts responsibility for the unit-based program.
- Promotes the Hospital/Unit Performance Improvement program to staff.
- Evaluates the results of monitoring with the staff and develops a corrective action plan to improve patient care.
- Collaborates with the Quality Management Coordinator on identified quality of care issues of the unit.
- Investigates and follows up on issues from patients' families and physicians.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as determined by the Medical Center in its sole and exclusive discretion.
- Establish and monitors an effective procedure booking system. Receives operative procedure booking from Surgeons, Surgeon Secretaries, or other authorized person.
- Updates M.D. Surgical privileges as per policy.
- Advises Surgeon regarding time of emergency/addedcases after consulting with OR Manager.
- Reviews, finalizes and approves the OR schedule for the next day prior its printing
What We're Looking For
EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Baccalaureate degree required or currently enrolled in a Baccalaureate program
EXPERIENCE: Three to five years' clinical/leadership Operating Room experience.
LICENSURE/QUALIFICATIONS: Current license to practice professional nursing in New Jersey. BSN Preferred, I.V. Certification per hospital Policy CPR and ACLS required.
WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Exposure to communicable diseases, blood and blood products, illness, confused and/or combative patients, hazardous chemicals, stressful situations, X-rays and fluoroscopy, sharp instruments and needles, and electricity.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Includes standing, walking, lifting patients, pushing wheelchairs, beds, stretchers, occasionally must stoop, reach above head, carry medium to light equipment.
Skills Required
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing or current enrollment in a baccalaureate program
- Three to five years of clinical and leadership operating room experience
- Current New Jersey license to practice professional nursing
- BSN degree
- IV certification per hospital policy
- CPR certification
- ACLS certification
