The Opportunity
The legal assistant will be part of the Definity legal department and will be responsible for assisting in all legal administrative duties. The successful candidate will work under the direction and guidance of approximately 2 lawyers and will assist with tasks as assigned.
What to Expect
- General file handling and practice management for civil litigation matters.
- Responsible for the ongoing administration/organization of files (opening/closing files, entering file details into software, requesting cheques, maintaining a paperless system, uploading documents received, and other tasks as assigned).
- Drafting correspondence and other documents as instructed to clients, third parties, experts, etc. and filing with the courts.
- Assisting lawyers with litigation management, including prioritizing of tasks and scheduling of meetings, questionings, mediations/JDR, and various attendances and events at court.
- Maintaining lawyers’ calendars and supervising their practices.
- Providing input into the procedures and practices.
- Working within a paperless environment.
- Performing other duties as required of a litigation assistant.
What you Bring
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a legal assistant as part of a team practicing insurance litigation in Alberta or personal injury experience.
- Knowledge of Alberta Court rules, practice directions and procedures.
- Strong document management skills with the ability to learn and utilize Definity’s various software programs such as TeamConnect and ACL.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Outlook and all MS Office applications.
- Ability to prioritize, organize and execute tasks in a quality manner with strong turnaround time.
- High degree of personal ethics, integrity and responsibility with an ability to deal with sensitive issues and safeguard privileged and confidential information.
- Great attention to detail with proof reading skills.
- Ability to perform under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple, yet sometimes conflicting priorities.
- Team player, adaptable to a changing environment.
- Ability to work in a paperless environment.
Salary Range: $45,000 - $82,100
High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada.
