Job DescriptionThe Assistant Horticulturalist will be responsible for assisting the Horticulturalist at providing superior service to both the internal and external customer. They will also be responsible for helping to manage the greenhouse and ornamental nursery facilities; selects, propagates and grows plant materials (except trees and larger shrubs) for ornamental landscaping for the golf course.
The Assistant Horticulturist:
- Provides superior customer service, positively effects interactions with customers and employees, and has the resiliency to deal with difficult customers in all types of business conditions and the ability to work harmoniously with coworkers.
- Assists in designing flower beds; cultivates and cares for shrubs and flowers; Trims and prunes hedges and shrubbery.
- Learns about preventative maintenance and the proper cleaning and safe operation of equipment.
- Maintains health of plants and appearance of displays.
- Assists in designing, installing and maintaining low-pressure irrigation systems for landscaping.
- Assists with routine maintenance of ornamental plantings.
- Applies pesticides and fertilizers to ornamental plantings.
- Advises the Golf Superintendent of the need for tree-trimming services.
- Maintains and repairs gardening hand tools, equipment and structures.
- Operates dump trucks and other light equipment in hauling materials and removing debris.
- Occasionally may assist in supervising a small labor force for special projects.
- This position operates in a working environment that is subject to hazards associated with use of pesticides and general landscape care products, basic hand and power tools, and gardening/mowing equipment.
- This position generally works outside and is subject to all weather conditions. Proper clothing is provided.
- Must be flexible to work varying shifts and time schedules as needed.
- Machines and equipment used but not limited to are basic hand and power tools; gardening and mowing equipment, spray equipment, etc.
- Basic knowledge of landscape design, irrigation systems and use of pesticides and fertilizers.
- Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science and the rules of golf.
- Ability to use tools, methods and materials used in grounds and landscape work.
