Summary:
The Times-Standard is seeking a passionate and driven Assistant Editor/General Assignment Reporter to join our close-knit team in covering the dynamic landscape of Humboldt County. This role offers an exciting opportunity to engage with the community, report on impactful local events, and contribute to a trusted news source. You'll be a key player in our newsroom, taking charge and collaborating with a dedicated team of journalists throughout the week.
What you will do:
- Primary responsibility is reporting at least two byline stories per day on a variety of issues relating to Humboldt County
- Posting breaking news to our times-standard.com as needed
- Assigning and editing stories and checking news pages one to two times per week
- Working cooperatively with our small team or journalists
- In addition to reporting duties, the position requires some editing and proofreading duties tied to the production of a daily newspaper and maintaining our website
- Driving to cover stories is occasionally required
What you will bring:
- AP style knowledge, and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics is ideal. Spelling and grammar skills required
- Experience working with various technologies including PC laptops, digital cameras, and recording equipment; knowledge of WordPress is a plus
- Good people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sources
- Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom required
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
Travel:
- Some travel is required as we cover a 4,000-square-mile area

The hourly wage is $20.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).

The majority of our roles are 100% remote excluding Production & Circulation although some roles require customer visits or occasional in office work. We do not have any intention of returning to an in office environment/culture.
