Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing with monitoring administrative and functional areas of the nursing department and supporting the overall daily operations of nursing services. This position assists with ensuring nursing services are provided in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as established Cavalier Healthcare policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Nursing (DON) with developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the nursing services department.
  • Assist the DON with developing, maintaining, and periodically updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day operations of the nursing department.
  • Provide written and/or verbal reports to the DON as necessary.
  • Assist the DON with maintaining required staffing ratios to support quality resident care.
  • Assist the DON, Administrator, and/or Human Resources Director with recruitment and retention of nursing personnel.
  • Develop or assist with the development of work assignments and schedules for nursing personnel.
  • Delegate duties to nursing personnel as appropriate.
  • Evaluate or assist with evaluations of nursing staff.
  • Assist the Infection Control Nurse with establishing and maintaining an effective Tuberculosis (TB) Program for residents and staff.
  • Report occupational exposures in accordance with established facility protocol.
  • Make daily rounds to all resident care areas to observe nursing staff as they perform assigned duties in accordance with established facility protocol.
  • Assist with the development, evaluation, and periodic updates of policies governing licensure and/or certification requirements for nursing staff and sitters.
  • Provide or assist with in-service training for facility staff.
  • Maintain or assist with maintaining current nursing employee files.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and promote resident rights.
  • Prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation of residents.
  • Promote a safe, clean environment in which residents may live.
  • Make unannounced rounds at various times to identify shift-specific concerns or problems.
  • Review the Twenty-Four Hour Report daily to remain aware of changes in residents' conditions and/or plans of treatment.
  • Assist with MDS+ and Total Care Plan meetings as indicated.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by the Director of Nursing.
  • Assist staff nurses on the floor as needed.
  • Serve as an active facility team member with residents as the first priority.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing with the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.
  • Assume the duties and responsibilities of the DON in his/her absence.

Hearing: Taking instructions from the Director of Nursing, 

Must be able to tolerate a high pace as typical for a nursing facility. Must be able to take and give instructions well and enjoy working with the elderly. Although employee is required to sit for prolonged periods of time, he/she must also be able to tolerate prolonged standing and walking.
