Job Description

Take the next step in your leadership career as an Assistant Director of Clinical Services (ADCS) at St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital. Reporting to and supporting the Director of Clinical Services (DCS), the ADCS provides operational and clinical leadership across the hospital. The role has accountability for clinical operations, workforce management, financial performance, and clinical governance, ensuring effective, efficient, and high-quality service delivery.

The ADCS plays a key leadership role supporting the hospital executive team, supporting achievement of organisational objectives while fostering a strong culture of safety, accountability, and patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Director of Clinical Services to develop, implement, and monitor operational plans, driving KPI achievement across clinical departments.
  • Planning and managing hospital and departmental budgets in consultation with executive team members
  • Provide oversight of patient flow, and discharge planning, ensuring optimal bed utilisation and timely progression of care.
  • Lead hospital-wide strategies to identify, escalate and actively manage long-stay patients, working collaboratively with clinical teams, VMOs, and discharge planning services to minimise delays and improve patient flow.
  • Provide direct line management and leadership to Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs) and clinical leaders across multiple areas, supporting workforce planning aligned with patient acuity and service demand.
  • Lead and coach clinical leaders to ensure effective roster management, performance development, and clear escalation pathways.
  • Manage on-site patient feedback and complaints, promoting a strong patient-centred culture and supporting positive patient experiences.
  • Contribute to and lead responses to clinical incidents, Root Cause Analysis reviews and risk management processes, ensuring timely investigation, escalation, and implementation of improvement strategies.
  • Support clinical governance frameworks by preparing reports and insights for relevant committees (e.g. Medical Advisory Committee, Patient Safety and Quality Committees).
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to drive service improvement initiatives, accreditation readiness, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Drive initiatives to enhance patient safety and maintain high quality patient outcomes.
  • Support the recruitment, engagement, and development of clinical staff and assist in maintaining a positive and high-performing workforce culture.

Skills and Experience  

You excel at fostering positive working relationships with key stakeholders, developing people and building high-performance teams. In addition, you will also demonstrate:

  • Relevant registration with AHPRA as Registered Nurse.
  • Experience in strategic planning, reporting, and policy development
  • Proven experience in a senior clinical leadership or management role
  • Strong leadership capability with the ability to inspire, engage, and develop teams
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex clinical operations in a dynamic environment
  • Experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and risk management
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including working with VMOs and senior leaders
  • Strong problem-solving, prioritisation, time management and decision-making skills
  • A track record of improving patient, staff, and consumer experience outcomes
