The Assistant Controller is a key member of our Finance Team and an integral part of the Support Services Department. Our ideal candidate will see this role as a ministry, not just a job. The Assistant Controller will oversee accounting operations, focusing on efficiency and productivity.

The Assistant Controller is a part-time position estimated to require an average of 20 hours per week, working out of the organization’s headquarters in San Jose.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise professional, technical, and clerical personnel in the performance of duties, such as accounts payable, fixed assets, miscellaneous billing, general ledger functions and reconciliations, restricted fund accounting, gift-in-kind reporting and valuation, grant reporting and other financial functions.
  • Review and approve accounts payable, journal entries, and reconciliations prepared by staff.
  • Oversee complete month-end and year-end accounting close process on a timely basis.
  • Analyze actual to budget variances on a monthly basis and assist in resolving and/or explaining variances, as well as variance analysis on individual accounts.
  • Evaluate existing procedures and make recommendations for reducing time and cost of operations.
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff and respond to inquiries timely.
  • Communicate regularly with direct reports; ensure that direct reports are performing their job responsibilities efficiently and effectively; prepare annual staff evaluations for direct reports.
  • Recommend training to keep the staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet the organization’s needs and objectives.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field
  • Supervisory and management experience 
  • Computer literate and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced MS Excel skills

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Non-Profit GAAP

Work Conditions

  • This job operates in a fast-paced and professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
  • Days and hours of work are typically in the office Monday through Friday.

  • Must have an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus Christ 
  • Must be active in a local Christian body of believers or at least pursuing community with other Christ-followers
  • Must have compatible theology on major issues of CityTeam's Statement of Faith
  • Must be committed to serving God and the body of Christ.
