Job Summary:

The Assistant Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing upstream oil and gas Production, Revenue and Regulatory/Compliance Accounting activities. This role requires a strong technical accounting foundation, deep industry accounting expertise, and the ability to partner closely with Operations, Land, Marketing/Midstream, and Finance. The ideal candidate enjoys managing complex accounting processes, developing talent, leveraging technology, and driving continuous improvement to enhance financial accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct Revenue, Production & Regulatory Accounting by supporting the respective functional leaders, establishing priorities, accountability, performance expectations and development plans. 

  • Oversee accurate well-level production, allocations, measurement, inventory, fuel/flare/use, gathering statements, and reconciliation from field measurement through revenue volumes.  Ensure the resolution of volume imbalances and discrepancies. 

  • Oversee operated and non-operated revenue accounting, purchaser statements, suspense, escheatment considerations and owner payments. 

  • Oversee timely and accurate production, severance tax, royalty and other required filings with state and federal agencies, including ONRR/BIA obligations, where applicable.   

  • Maintain effective internal controls over production, revenue and regulatory processes.   

  • Serve as an accounting liaison between Operations, Land, Marketing/Midstream, Measurement, Engineering, Tax and Finance. 

  • Ensure revenue-related AR, accrued revenue, royalties payable, production/severance taxes, suspense and other assigned accounts are reconciled.   

  • Oversee the standardization of processes across basins/acquisitions, reduce manual work, improve data interfaces and reporting, establish and measure KPIs, and identify automation opportunities.   

  • Drive timely completion of the monthly close cycle, including the review and approval of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations. 

  • Support the Operations Controller in mentoring, developing, and leading a high-performing accounting team while fostering a collaborative and accountable culture.  

  • Oversee full-cycle upstream accounting activities, including revenue, joint interest billing (JIB), accounts payable, production accounting, and financial reporting coordination.  

  • Manage and support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and complete financial reporting.  

  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial close deliverables.; perform variance analysis against budget, forecast, and prior periods.  

  • Assist with the preparation, review, and coordination of annual audited financial statements and supporting schedules, ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal controls.  

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and third-party service providers.  

  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Land, Revenue, FP&A, and other business teams to ensure accurate financial representation of business activities and performance.  

  • Identify, assess, and implement process improvements, system enhancements, and special projects to improve efficiency, controls, and data quality.  

  • Leverage accounting systems, reporting tools, and automation to streamline workflows and improve business insights.  

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.  

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.  

  • Strong experience in upstream oil and gas Production, Revenue and Regulatory/Compliance Accounting.  

  • Solid understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements.  

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.  

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.  

  • Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across multiple functions and levels of the organization.  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel (pivot tables, lookups, logical formulas, and large data sets).  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA designation.  

  • Experience supporting multi-entity accounting structures.  

  • Familiarity with accounting and reporting systems commonly used in oil and gas operations (e.g., ERP and production accounting systems).  

  • Experience with data analysis tools, reporting automation, or SQL. 

Skills Required
