The Role
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Chief Engineer supervises Engineering and Mechanic staff responsible for maintaining various aspects of the HVAC, plumbing and fire suppression operations for the Metropolitan Opera, which is a 24x7 operation. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) union-represented position (Local 30) with the potential for overtime work. 

Rate of pay: $49.81 per hour per CBA.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervise engineers and mechanic staff including training, personnel development, etc. 
  • Utility Management such as tracking use, consumption, cost, and reporting as directed by Management.
  • Tracking and oversight of CMMS tickets and workflows for department.
  • Conduct regular inspections of building systems and equipment; identify and resolve issues.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as health and safety standards. 
  • Recommend and implement improvements for preventive maintenance programs on an ongoing basis.  
  • Develop and maintain an effective preventive and predictive maintenance program for task scheduling, routines, and performance (program to include procedures for annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly, and other scheduled maintenance as provided by the manufacturer’s recommendations and/or industry best practices).
  • Formulate and conduct building-related systems and equipment training.
  • Coordinate construction and maintenance efforts with outside contractors.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with staff, management, and vendors.
  • Respond to all emergency situations quickly (fire, evacuation, equipment failure etc.).
  • Implement and administer inventory control programs, purchase parts and supplies.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Key competencies include: excellent leadership and communication skills. Capable of mentoring engineers and mechanics and effectively collaborating with Met Administrative and other trades.
  • 10+ years of related work experience in a supervisory capacity commercial property setting or any similar combination of education or experience in the operation, installation, and maintenance of building systems within depth technical understanding and knowledge of all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and control systems.

  • Appropriate Licenses and Certificates of Fitness: the following are required for this position.
  • Q-01 Refrigerating System Operating Engineer
  • Universal CFC License
  • S-12 Citywide Sprinkler Systems
  • S-13 Citywide Standpipe Systems
  • F-03 CofF for indoor place of assembly
  • A-35/G-35 To Operate and Maintain Air Compressors
  • S-95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
  • F-01 Fire Guard for Impairment

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Familiarity with DDC and BMS functionality and troubleshooting of same.
  • Basic Proficiency in Outlook, Excel & Word 
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of building systems and operations, contractual maintenance, construction & related services, and local laws & building codes pertaining to building operations and safety.
