Provides user operations support, coordinates engineers and staff, reports project results, mentors students, conducts outreach, and collaborates on cross-facility research projects.
Summary Generated by Built In

The eBERlight group at the X-ray Science Division (XSD) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is currently seeking an assistant beamline scientist to provide support for the biological and environmental research activities at the x-ray Imaging group (IMG) beamlines. The IMG group operates 2-BM, 7-BM and 32-ID beamlines with a broad set of full-field imaging instruments, including ultrahigh-speed imaging, nano-meter resolution 2D and 3D imaging and high-speed micro-tomography. The IMG group develops scientific software methods for data analysis and interpretation. These instruments and methods support APS user scientific programs and independent beamline scientist research activities in very broad areas, including materials science, geology and biology.

The successful candidate will provide support to both the eBERlight and IMG groups’ scientific user community. The primary focus of this role will be on advancing the applications of x-ray tomography/synchrotron-based full field imaging in the realms of biological and environmental systems, enabling transformational scientific discoveries, achieving a comprehensive understanding of complex biological, earth, and environmental systems. The selected individual is expected to carry out research activities in close collaboration with the other members of eBERlight and IMG groups.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing R&D activities

  • Conceiving, designing and implementing synchrotron instrumentation equipment and scientific experiments

  • User operation and support

  • Coordinating engineers and support staff assigned to the project

  • Reporting project progress status and relevant results in the appropriate form

  • Student mentoring

  • Outreach activities

  • Coordinating cross-facility projects

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science or related fields

  • Knowledge of X-ray methods, particularly computed tomography and relevant instrumentation and software.

  • Proficiency in software skills for advanced data analysis and image segmentation. This includes expertise in utilizing software tools and algorithms to effectively analyze and process complex datasets, enabling predictive understanding of biological, earth, and environmental systems.

  • Expertise in designing and developing customized in situ/operando sample environments specifically tailored for studying biological and environmental systems.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Knowledge in the fields of biological and environmental science.

  • Skills and expertise in the use and design of sample environments or analysis of large and complex datasets are desirable.
