Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Process asphalt, provide steam and compressed air to the plant.
  • Unloads trucks of raw materials to stills and production tanks T7 & T8 in the absence of the shingle line employee.
  • Perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with all Federal, State, local, and GAF/Minneapolis Plant policies, regulations, rules, and standards including, but not limited to using proper Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures, confined space entry procedures, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), maintain and operate the Asphalt Operations and Boiler Room in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Maintain housekeeping in the Asphalt Operations Area and Boiler Room. This includes, but is not limited to, picking up and properly disposing of all trash, grounds keeping (sweeping, snow removal, water removal from containment), clean up and properly dispose of all raw materials and products from leaks and spills in a timely manner. All waste containers labeled and properly stored. Tools must be cleaned and properly stored.
  • Completes required equipment PM’s that are assigned to the area operators by management. This includes but is not limited to: steam snuffing tests, sparger cleaning, air compressor cleaning, tank vent checks and clearing tank vent pipes, steaming out the waste oil system, cleaning petrochem panels, painting, and other duties as assigned by management.
  • Completes repairs to various piping and utility systems, including steam and condensate systems where welding is not required.
  • Take ownership of the equipment to be the eyes and the ears of the Asphalt Operations and Boiler areas. Relay key issues and problems in a timely manner to appropriate personnel (i.e. supervisor, maintenance) in person, or via email & phone as required.
  • Collects flux and coating, boiler chemistry, and waste oil samples and performs quality or other testing on samples in the Asphalt Operations and Boiler Room to maintain quality and operational specifications. Adjust process settings to achieve the quality and operational specifications. Samples are to be collected and tested per defined protocols (i.e. quality samples are collected and tested while the plant is in production).
  • Maintains a positive attitude in working as a team member with all departments. Set a positive example for other hourly employees in the Minneapolis plant, and show a sense of urgency to correct operational, safety, quality and housekeeping problems.
  • Demonstrates ability to train personnel in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment and systems in the boiler room and asphalt operations, including plant hot oil heaters, air compressors, and plant steam, condensate, and hot oil tracing and piping systems.
  • Demonstrates sufficient Boiler and Asphalt Operations competency to operate and troubleshoot in the boiler room and asphalt operations, including plant hot oil heaters, air compressors, and plant steam, condensate, and hot oil tracing and piping systems.
  • Monitors and oversees the plant Fire and Sprinkler system with the use of outside resources as necessary.
  • Monitors heaters, incinerators, pumps, blowers, fume reduction systems, valves, boilers, tanks, instruments, flow meters, panel lights, other indicators, and other equipment to ensure proper operation, conformity of process conditions. Troubleshoots and calls on appropriate resources when problems with equipment arise in a timely manner.
  • Monitor plant systems during off hours including areas not normally the responsibility of the Boiler/Still yard Operator. Not responsible for correction of problems, but responsible to notify management of problems with plant systems on weekends.
  • Informs supervisor or designee when unscheduled maintenance is required on equipment.
  • Monitors work area to observe and inspect equipment for potential and actual hazards, wear, leaks, and other abnormal conditions. Informs supervisor or designee of problems in a timely manner when needed.
  • Completes daily and weekly check sheets as required.
  • Utilizes company provided desktop computer and other electronic resources: o Email as a form of communication to conduct GAF business.
    • Employees must be logged on to their email account when starting their shift. Emails to be read in a timely manner, and accounts used for company business, only.
  • HMI/Wonderware to monitor and control the processes
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC) software, WinSPC, to input, maintain, and track statistical quality data obtained from quality tests.
  • Wonderware Trend to analyze the process for trend analysis.
  • Confers with technical personnel and supervisors to report or resolve conditions affecting safety, efficiency, and product quality.
  • Attends Safety/Operations meetings as required.
  • Maintains cross training in both boilers and stills areas.

Under This Roof, We Require

  • At minimum a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Can work required shift-work and overtime.
  • Ability to perform higher level mathematics and simple statistical calculations.
  • Interact and interface at all levels of plant personnel, with ability to communicate with a variety of departments. Ability to function within a teamwork environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one, with email, and by telephone at all levels.
  • Personal computer knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to make decisions based on data.
  • Vocational school, industrial experience, technical college or an accredited institution in certifying skills in the following areas: High pressure boilers operation, industrial/production plant operator, industrial maintenance, or a diploma in industrial technician or industrial machine maintenance, preferred.
  • The position of Boilers/Stills Operator in training requires that the individual demonstrate proficiencies in categories listed below.
    • Initially, the Boilers/Stills Operator in Training will be trained in the Asphalt Operations,- but must be able to learn the Boiler Operations process to become a licensed Class 2B Boiler Operator.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the safe operation, maintaining and troubleshooting of the asphalt/fuel oil truck unload systems, including plant adhesive and self seal systems unload systems.
  • Ability to identify need of repair to various “Piping Systems” i.e. this includes but is not limited to threaded, welded and/or plastic piping systems for air, water, steam, gas, fuel oil, asphalt, and other small plant systems.
  • Ability to detect problems and notify appropriate persons in regard to tanks, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, actuators, temperature and capacitance probes, level indicators, pressure and rupture devices, i.e. this includes but is not limited to pump, valve and actuators, pump packing, mechanical seals, etc.
