Our firm is currently looking for a dedicated Asbestos Abatement Coordinator to be located in the Los Angeles, CA area. This position will support asbestos abatement activities for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in K-12 public schools and is an excellent opportunity to be part of one of the largest school bond programs in the country. The actual removal of asbestos will be done by a specialized contractor. This position will be involved in conducting surveys, sampling, preparing assessment reports, and abatement design only. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains open communication with central and regional existing departments in Facilities (Maintenance & Operations, Project Execution, and Central Design Management Group) to provide technical support related to asbestos and lead issues.

  • Prepares site assessment (Phase 1), abatement design (Phase 2) to address the impact of asbestos and lead-containing materials on construction projects.

  • Reviews environmental consultants’ Phase 1, 2, and 3 (project monitoring) reports for accuracy.

  • Surveys sites to recommend the best method to mitigate the abatement of asbestos and lead containing building materials.

  • Prepares job estimates for project assessment, design and monitoring.

  • Prepares reports describing inspection findings or results and impact to projects determined by review of construction drawings.

  • Plans the repair, removal, disposal or encapsulation of asbestos-containing building materials, and abatement or in-place management of lead-based paint on structures and mechanical systems.

  • Conducts environmental project monitoring during construction to ensure compliance with applicable laws, project specifications, safety regulations and established work practices.

  • Investigates accidents or incidents that occur on or near the school grounds during the asbestos/lead related projects.

  • Performs asbestos bulk sampling and lead wipe or paint chip sampling to investigate asbestos release or elevated lead exposure to children.

  • Reviews condition assessment reports of asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM), address damaged/friable ACBM and manage the processing of asbestos bulk sampling data and abatement records.

  • Update projects’ tracking sheets for progress status.

  • Use Maximo to plan and track job progress and report actual labor charges.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering or any related field. Candidates without the required degree must have additional years of experience to compensate for education on a year-for-year basis.

  • A minimum of five (5) years full time paid professional construction experience on projects involving environmental (lead/asbestos) assessment, sampling, design, monitoring, and abatement; OR two (2) years of relevant experience plus a Certification from the State of CA as a Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST); OR certification from the State of CA as a Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAS).

  • Additional Mandatory certifications include: Possession of Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), asbestos course certificates (Building Inspector, Management Planner, Contractor/Supervisor and Project Designer); Possession of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting
    (RRP) Certification; Possession of CA Department of Health (CDPH) Lead certification (Inspector/Assessor/Project Monitor).

The salary range for this full-time role is $75,000.00-$100,000.01 per year. Ranges are determined based on the position, geography, client and industry experience and level, and represent a good faith effort to provide a fair and equitable salary. This range reflects base salary only, and not the total compensation package. Cumming Group reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range, depending on a candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications, including client requirements.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent additional years of experience)
