Norm Ai pioneered Legal Engineering, the process that empowers lawyers to build and supervise domain-specific AI agents with Norm’s proprietary suite of no-code software tools. Norm hired dozens of lawyers from premier U.S. law firms and trained them as Legal Engineers, who specialize in breaking down legal workflows into units of analysis targeted enough to reliably leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) for reasoning. The granular LLM outputs that constitute a given workflow are orchestrated in a logically structured and human interpretable manner and rigorously validated against data and expertise. The resulting dynamic systems can complete the first pass of the legal workflow and provide detailed explanations.
We also developed the first Domain Specific Language (DSL) for fully representing regulatory requirements in AI code. This DSL, deployed with our enterprise platform, enables Norm clients to transform workflows and apply compliance checks at the source of business activities.

This Role
As an Applied AI Engineer at Norm Ai, you will design, build, and iterate on enterprise-grade AI agents for end-to-end completion of high-stakes legal and compliance workflows. You’ll work closely with our software engineering, legal engineering, and product teams to bridge disciplines and expand the coverage and capabilities of our automation platform.
You Will:Regularly contribute performant, high-quality code to our production codebase, conforming to the high standards of our engineering team.
Oversee data collection, experimentation, and data analysis to continuously improve the platform, working closely with domain experts.
Build comprehensive benchmarks and evaluation suites to measure agent performance and guide future improvements to the platform.
Develop new AI workflows and systems that make cutting-edge AI available across our platform.
Architect the system of underlying prompts that power our agents, engineering effective context structures and automated pipelines for prompt optimization.
Enable continuous learning in our agents through memory, feedback, and client-specific preferences.
Develop legal and compliance domain expertise to assist with all of the above.
4+ years of experience as a software engineer, ML engineer, or data scientist
Strong programming skills in Python, proficiency in Docker and data storage technologies such as Postgres and Redis
Willingness to work with frontend technologies (Typescript, React, etc.) to bridge the gap between research ideas and the productization of new initiatives
Experience in AI/ML infrastructure and tooling
Interest in becoming a legal and compliance domain expert and working closely with professionals in the field
Strong reading, writing, and quantitative skills, as well as a data-driven approach to problem solving
Familiarity with and an eagerness to apply the latest AI research
Experience applying traditional ML systems and processes in the context of state-of-the-art LLMs
Experience deriving insights from PDFs and other unstructured or semi-structured data types
Experience with context engineering and memory in the context of AI agents
Experience modeling uncertainty in ML systems
Comp and Benefits
$200,000 - $275,000 a year
The range displayed in this job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salary for this position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including job-related skills (as uncovered during the interview process), experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed here reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity or benefits. We offer a competitive salary along with equity compensation.
