What is an Applications Analyst

An Applications Analyst will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and enhancing business applications to ensure they operate efficiently and align with organizational goals. This role serves as a bridge between business users, IT, and vendors, ensuring that applications meet functional requirements and perform reliably.

What does an Applications Analyst do?

Configuration, testing, analysis, and operational support, including but not limited to:

  • Provides day-to-day support, troubleshooting, and issue resolution for assigned applications.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact between business stakeholders, IT, and vendors for application-related needs.

  • Analyzes application performance, identifies issues, and implements enhancements or solutions.

  • Manages application configurations, upgrades, and patches.

  • Documents processes, workflows, and technical procedures related to supported applications.

  • Collaborates with business units to gather requirements and translate them into application or configuration changes.

  • Supports testing efforts, including test planning, execution, and validation of fixes or enhancements.

  • Monitors application usage and performance, recommending improvements as needed.

  • Ensures applications meet compliance, data security, and governance standards.

  • Participates in projects involving application implementations, integrations, and migrations.

  • Provides support for storm restoration efforts.

What does it take to be an Applications Analyst?

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or STEM related field of study. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, candidates with an associate’s degree in the aforementioned fields of study and 3+ years of experience in information technology application support or candidates with a high school diploma or equivalency degree and 5+ years of experience in information technology application support will be considered.

  • Experience with SQL and database fundamentals for querying and issue investigation. 

  • Familiarity with system integrations, interfaces and data flows

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels in an interactive team environment

  • Ability to multitask, pay close attention to detail, and adapt to a variety of support environments and assignments

  • Ability to understand business functionality and translate it into process flow diagrams, application requirements and application design

  • Must be able to work off-hours and weekends when required and be available for scheduled 24/7 callout support

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

  • Understanding of map services, feature services, and geospatial platform tools

  • Ability to manage vendor relationships

  • Experience with application configuration and testing

  • Familiarity with system integrations, interfaces and data flows

  • Programming experience

  • Experience supporting business applications in a production environment.

  • Experience with vendor management for third-party supported applications

  • Experience in energy & utilities or services industry

This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within the Systems Analyst job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience. Pay Range: $73,000-$171,300
