Sales Application Engineer II

Summary

The Sales Application Engineer II supports business growth and customer satisfaction by delivering technical sales support, application expertise, and engineered HVAC solutions. This role partners closely with CSO Account Managers and customers to identify project needs, develop tailored equipment and system solutions, prepare accurate proposals and pricing, and help drive successful sales outcomes.

This position plays a key role in converting leads into opportunities, supporting the sales process from concept through handoff to operations, and building long-term customer relationships through technical consultation, responsiveness, and solution-focused collaboration.

What You Will Do

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with CSO Account Managers to support customer retention, account growth, and repeat business.
  • Travel to sales offices as needed to educate teams on product benefits, applications, and special-use solutions.
  • Respond promptly to customer and sales office inquiries, identify needs, and provide technical guidance or route requests appropriately.
  • Develop marketing literature and support product messaging for modified Trane equipment solutions.
  • Price, quote, negotiate, and sell modified Trane equipment to Trane offices.
  • Convert leads into qualified opportunities by identifying project requirements, constraints, and customer goals.
  • Evaluate customer HVAC application needs and develop practical, effective system solutions.
  • Prepare project take-offs, equipment selections, pricing, and integration plans for equipment, controls, and services.
  • Develop preliminary fulfillment schedules and support project planning activities.
  • Prepare, review, and validate proposals with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support the direct sales process and contribute to achieving or exceeding sales targets aligned with business strategy.
  • Review contract terms and conditions for alignment with Trane standards.
  • Prepare transition documentation and communicate project readiness for handoff to the operations team.
  • Resolve project scope deviations in collaboration with internal teams following Project Scope Validation.
  • Provide technical consultation on HVAC system solutions, including financial and performance-based considerations.
  • Coordinate with CSO Account Managers on project specifications and proposal development.
  • Assist customers with technical questions related to HVAC systems, Trane products, BAS, installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform design and analysis activities involving refrigerant systems, electronic controls, airside systems, and waterside systems.
  • Apply sound engineering principles and practices to deliver high-quality, accurate work products.
  • Interpret and work with refrigerant piping, electrical, and hydronic piping schematics.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to standards, literature, and product quality.
  • Use tools such as Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Trane selection and pricing programs, specialty vendor software, and Excel-based reporting tools to create submittals, construction drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, IOM manuals, quotes, and analysis.
  • Support fulfillment activities by assisting with cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with estimators to interpret specifications and prepare proposals.
  • Attend, contribute to, and at times lead meetings with team members, sales personnel, customers, and management.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to support business needs, including occasional travel, overnight stays, overtime, weekend work, or cross-functional support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least three years of experience in estimating, engineering, sales, or construction management.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, temperature controls, and system applications.
  • Experience developing equipment selections, quotes, proposals, and technical solutions for customers.
  • Must have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and be familiar with pivot tables and creating Excel databases.
  • Experience working with databases and organizing, analyzing, and reporting technical or sales-related data.
  • Ability to interpret specifications, diagrams, schedules, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of refrigerant piping, electrical systems, and hydronic piping schematics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Trane selection and pricing tools, and other related software applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Solid analytical and mathematical skills, including the ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret graphs.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and sound judgment in situations with changing priorities or limited standardization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across sales, engineering, estimating, fulfillment, and operations teams.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel occasionally, including overnight stays, and work outside normal business hours when needed.
