The Application Engineer II designs, configures, enhances, maintains, and supports business-critical Warehouse Management System (WMS) applications. Working within established architecture and technical direction, this independent contributor applies technical and warehouse process knowledge to deliver reliable system changes, integrations, reports, and production support solutions. The position partners with warehouse operations, business analysts, technical teams, and vendors throughout the solution lifecycle.

Enterprise WMS experience is required. Strong hands-on Oracle SQL and PL/SQL skills are required to analyze WMS data, troubleshoot application behavior, support integrations, develop reports, and perform query-level optimization. This is a WMS application engineering role, not a database administration role. Manhattan WMOS experience is preferred, but candidates with experience in another enterprise WMS and the ability to learn Manhattan WMOS will be considered.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Application Software Development - 20%: Configure and enhance WMS functionality and develop application components, integrations, operational and analytical reports, and technical utilities based on approved warehouse business and technical requirements.

  • Application Software Maintenance - 20%: Diagnose and correct complex WMS application defects using logs, SQL, interface data, configuration, and system behavior analysis. Perform query-level analysis and optimization, and engage database specialists for indexing, instance tuning, database architecture, or other database administration changes.

  • Application Software Roadmap - 15%: Contribute to the WMS application roadmap by assessing business needs, system capabilities, enhancements, upgrades, integrations, technical improvements, and support priorities.

  • Testing and Performance - 15%: Design and execute WMS functional, integration, regression, and application performance tests. Support system integration testing, user acceptance testing, production deployment, and post-release validation.

  • Documentation and Recovery - 15%: Create and maintain technical documentation, support procedures, interface specifications, test evidence, and user documentation. Follow established source control, backup, and recovery practices.

  • Horizon Scanning - 15%: Develop an understanding of WMS capabilities, warehouse technology, and relevant product developments. Contribute to evaluating their potential impact and usefulness to the organization.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Partner with warehouse operations and business analysts to understand inbound, inventory, outbound, and shipping processes; clarify requirements; and implement approved WMS solutions.

  • Support interfaces between WMS, ERP, transportation, parcel, automation, reporting, and related platforms.

  • Configure and support WMS functions, workflows, and business rules within established standards and design direction.

  • Use SQL and PL/SQL to analyze WMS transactions and data, investigate production issues, support interfaces, and develop operational and analytical reports. Validate report accuracy and optimize application queries when needed.

  • Collaborate with internal teams, consultants, software vendors, and infrastructure partners to resolve issues and deliver changes.

  • Provide clear status updates, document root cause and resolution, and contribute to knowledge transfer within the team.

  • Participate in scheduled on-call and after-hours production support as required.

  • Follow organizational change management, security, software development, and project delivery practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study required, or high school diploma with equivalent relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

  • At least 4–6 years of relevant and progressive experience, including hands-on support, implementation, configuration, or enhancement of an enterprise WMS, required.

  • Ability to work independently on assigned solutions while seeking guidance for unfamiliar, high-risk, or architectural decisions.

  • Experience supporting a business-critical WMS production environment and resolving application, configuration, data, and integration issues.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new applications, warehouse processes, and technical tools.

Technical and Domain Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Manhattan WMOS, Blue Yonder/JDA, SAP EWM, Oracle WMS, or a comparable enterprise WMS.

  • Strong understanding of warehouse operations, including inbound, inventory management, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, and fulfillment processes.

  • Strong hands-on Oracle SQL and practical PL/SQL skills, including complex queries, data analysis, report development, production troubleshooting, and execution-plan-based query optimization. Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and modify existing procedures, functions, and packages used by WMS applications.

  • Experience developing operational and analytical reports using SQL and reporting tools.

  • Experience tracing WMS integrations and transaction flows across messages, files, APIs, batch processes, and dependent applications to identify and resolve failures.

  • Familiarity with Unix or Linux environments, application logs, job scheduling, and common production support tools.

  • Experience designing and executing system, integration, regression, and user acceptance tests.

  • Intermediate application development or scripting capability used to support WMS enhancements, integrations, automation, and technical utilities.

  • Ability to connect warehouse process knowledge with system behavior and data analysis, validate report results, and recommend practical application solutions.

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on Manhattan WMOS experience in one or more functional areas.

  • Experience with WMS integrations to ERP, transportation, parcel, automation, or material-handling systems.

  • Experience in a high-volume warehouse or distribution environment.
