Job Description

Interviews incoming patients or representatives to obtain identifying information and other data required for admission. Performs a variety of clerical duties supporting Emergency Room registration.

Job Responsibility

  • * Greets, interviews and registers Emergency Room patients or representative.
  • * Verifies all patient, guarantor, subscriber and insurance information and enters same into department computer system. Uses Pacific Interpreter phone or Pocket Talker when necessary.
  • * Completes Medicare Secondary Payor questionnaire.
  • * Completes, reviews, updates and replenishes Medicaid and Medicaid Managed Care transportation fund. Disperses Medicaid and Medicaid Managed Care Metro Cards and records transactions.
  • * Obtains, secures and witnesses all necessary consents.
  • * Places identification bracelets on all patients.
  • * Explains Hospital policies regarding admission, discharge, visiting, smoking, valuables, etc., to patients and their families.
  • * Provides information regarding Advance Directives, Patient Bill of Rights and Notice of Privacy Practices. Completes questionnaire regarding Advance Directives for the patient's medical record.
  • * Communicates with Bed Management and reviews Pre-Admit Tracking to obtain bed assignments on all admissions.
  • * Notifies appropriate physicians of admissions, transfers and consults. Enters all pertinent information on the admitting board.
  • * Completes daily reconciliation of all patients. Reviews and updates daily census log. Maintains “Left After Triage Log” and “Missing Chart Log”.
  • * Enters orders into the computer system. Schedules all ancillary tests and special procedures
  • * Attaches vouchers to lab specimens and arranges transport to lab, as required.
  • * Arranges all inter-divisional and intra-divisional transfers and homebound ambulance discharges. Notifies private ambulances of diversion status.
  • * Performs final chart review, incorporates loose sheets and ensures entire chart assembly is completed upon patient discharge.
  • * Copies charts of all patient expirations, needle stick exposures, transfers, Level I traumas, STEMI Codes and Stroke Codes.
  • * Notifies Bed Management of expirations and ensures required information reaches them within appropriate timeframe.
  • * Prepares and generates death certificates, as required.
  • * Posts resident house staff and attending specialty schedules. Updates department on-call books with daily changes.
  • * Performs routine clerical tasks. Answers phones courteously, responds to requests for information, directs calls or takes messages, files, photocopies, faxes information, maintains bulletin boards, etc.
  • * Operates multiple-line console to relay incoming, outgoing and intra-system calls.
  • * Contacts personnel using beeper system, department telephone system and spectra link telephones. Utilizes overhead paging system for all announcements, such as consults and returning calls.
  • * Maintains updated list of Administrators, Attending Doctors, Medical and Surgical Staff, and Legal, by maintaining extensions and telephone numbers. Updates various lists and records, such as beepers, emergency telephone numbers and spectra link telephones
  • * Provides Emergency Department directory assistance to Physicians and others.
  • * Maintains all appropriate logs including, but not limited to, Transfer Log, Rapid Follow-Up Log, Diversion, etc.
  • * Maintains appropriate related inventory par levels for department.
  • * Reports all equipment needing repair and initiates work orders.
  • * Performs related duties as required.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Successful completion of hospital training/orientation program, required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year related registration/clerical experience with public contact, required. Prior Emergency Room experience, preferred.
  • Typing 35 wpm, required.
  • Good interpersonal skills to deal courteously with patients their families, and physicians and all levels of hospital personnel, required.

Skills Required
