The South African opportunity

South Africa is undergoing the most significant reform of its electricity sector in a generation. The unbundling of Eskom, the introduction of a competitive wholesale electricity market, and the rapid growth of independent power producers and private power trading are together opening Africa's largest power market to competition, private investment and renewables at scale.

These changes are creating strong and growing demand for independent, rigorous market analysis to guide the decisions of investors, developers, utilities, regulators and government.
Aurora is entering this market at a pivotal moment. This is a rare opportunity to join the world's leading power analytics business as part of its very first African team, based in Cape Town, and to help build the business from the ground up while growing your own expertise in one of the world's most dynamic energy markets.

Exposure to Teams
As an Analyst or Senior Analyst, you will gain hands-on experience across our two core teams in Cape Town:
  • Advisory: executing bespoke consulting projects for clients
  • Research: developing market forecast reports and original in-depth analysis on the future of South Africa's energy system
About the teams:

Advisory
  •  Projects include valuations of energy assets, modelling bespoke scenarios and asset configurations, and analysis to forecast asset economics for investors, banks, developers and utilities. The Advisory team also works with governments and regulators on designing and evaluating energy policy.
  • While most projects last around two weeks, longer engagements such as multi-client studies or policy work can run for several months.
  • You will usually work alongside other analysts, with project teams typically made up of one or two analysts, a project manager and a senior member providing oversight. Teams re-form for each new project, so you will get the chance to work with everyone across the wider team.
Research
  • Market forecast reports are the main output of the Research team. You will help build and update Aurora's view of how South Africa's power system will evolve over the coming decades, modelling the market based on the latest assumptions on demand, commodity prices, market activity and policy. This combines desk research and modelling in collaboration with other teams.
  • The team also produces regular briefings and mini-conferences that present timely, in-depth analysis of specific aspects of the market.
  • Our research is read by subscribers from across the industry, including developers, utilities, asset optimisers, system operators, policymakers and regulators.

  • Demonstrated quantitative ability, through academic, extracurricular or work experience
  • Effective communication and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and stakeholders
  • A proven ability to deliver high-quality work and manage responsibilities effectively
  • Fluency in English (native level or professional proficiency, C1/C2)

For Senior Analyst applicants, we additionally look for:
  • Relevant experience in the electricity or energy sector, whether at a consultancy, a government or regulatory body, or an industry participant
  • Demonstrated experience using data to deliver electricity market insights
  • Strong project management skills and the confidence to manage client relationships directly.

Knowledge of or a strong interest in the South African and wider African energy markets is an advantage.
