AltaGas - Manager, Community & Indigenous Relations

This is a newly created role reporting to the Director, Indigenous and Community Relations. We are seeking an energetic and authentic leader committed to making a positive impact on local and Indigenous communities to build and leverage AltaGas' reputation in British Columbia.

This position can be based in Prince Rupert, BC with monthly travel to our corporate office in Calgary, AB, or based in Calgary, AB with 75% travel to Prince Rupert, BC. Preference will be given to candidates residing or willing to relocate to Prince Rupert, BC.

You Will:

  • Build and sustain positive and productive working relationships with regional stakeholders, Indigenous Groups, community leaders, environmental organizations, and other community members with an interest in AltaGas’ assets and business

  • Strategize and lead impactful community engagement

  • Be the principal ambassador for the company, responsible for sharing its vision with the local community

  • Coordinate volunteer activities and corporate social responsibility programs

  • Monitor and report on community issues that could impact the organization

  • Monitor, measure, and provide feedback on the effectiveness of community relations campaigns

  • Provide leadership and innovation for the continuous enhancement and implementation of the Indigenous Relations Program and processes in order to deliver sustainable and responsible business results

  • Lead, mentor and continue to build a high-performing team of technical experts and professionals to provide timely, coordinated, and innovative support to the Midstream business

  • Be responsible for the completion of accurate regulatory filings for External Affairs and Indigenous Relations in compliance with provincial, federal and local regulatory requirements

  • Monitor AltaGas’ engagement and honouring commitments made with Indigenous groups

  • Work to build a visible and meaningful presence for AltaGas within key communities by coordinating company participation in key events and recommending community investment opportunities

  • Proactively develop and maintain strong working relationships with key government and industry contacts

  • Understand the opportunities, challenges, trends, issues, and risks that could have a material impact on AltaGas’ Midstream business through stakeholder and Indigenous engagement and monitoring

  • Work closely with facility operations and project teams to understand existing and new development opportunities and collaborating on the development and implementation of Indigenous participation plans, including contracting and employment, education and training

  • Preparing reports for the corporate office as well as briefing notes for senior management to provide direction, guidance, and support on issues that may impact AltaGas’ operations and project developments

  • Supporting the coordination of AltaGas’ Community Partnership Programs, focused on Indigenous Workforce, Community Investment and Rail Safety initiatives

  • Coordinating, supporting, and representing AltaGas, when required, in various industry, government committee and external events

You Have:

  • 7+ Years experience in government, industry, policy, media relations, public relations or stakeholder and Indigenous relations required including

  • Experience with/knowledge of regulatory requirements governing the development and operation of AltaGas’ activities in the areas of geographical assignment

  • Experience and existing relationships with community members and elected officials in British Columbia, particularly in the NW Coast region, would be an asset

  • Excellent communication skills (active listening, public speaking, verbal, written), along with ability to interface with internal and external parties

  • Experience in and familiarity with the energy sector

  • Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, Word)

  • Proactively develops and maintains strong working relationships with Indigenous, community, industry, and key government contacts

  • Grows trust in and expands the long-term relationships established by AltaGas

  • Demonstrates flexibility and an ability to respond easily to shifting priorities

  • Operates with a high level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability

  • Ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial environment, as well as ability to work as part of a team

  • Manages projects and activities from conception to completion, with limited oversight

  • Eligible to lobby at both Provincial and Federal levels in Canada

  • Bachelor's Degree in policy, law, public relations, marketing, communications, or journalism or the equivalent preferred
