DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International’s Baltimore Aviation Practice is seeking an Airfield Electrical Designer to support our growing Airfield Electrical Practice.
MBI’s Airfield Electrical Practice brings deep expertise in products, standards, and installation practices to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and schedule-conscious design solutions. We support a full range of airport operations from small regional facilities to large civilian and military airfields with a focus on reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
MBI is actively involved with industry leading organizations, including the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), Airport Consultants Council (ACC), and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America Aviation Lighting Committee (IESALC), ensuring our designs reflect the latest advancements and best practices.
The Airfield Electrical Practice’s Mission and Goal is to design systems that are not only resilient and reliable, but also cost-effective to install and maintain while enhancing pilot situational awareness and long-term performance. We strive to serve both the end user responsible for maintaining safe and reliable operations as well as the capital improvement program manager tasked with balancing airport needs and resources. Within this mission, we offer trusted guidance and a holistic approach from the airfield electrical vault to every light fixture, sign, NAVAID, and other assets.
Execution of our Vision and Mission requires us to provide clear, concise, consistent engineering documents and consultation directly to our clients with correct, coordinated, cost conscious and schedule sensitive airfield electrical solutions to fulfill their capital improvement and operational needs while creating a rewarding and enduring relationship.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The candidate will serve as primary production staff with the future career path of becoming a Senior Designer or Associate. The candidate will be expected to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities under direct oversight of Project Engineers and Project Managers.
- Production of construction drawings, reports, calculations, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and other deliverables for assigned projects in a variety of technical knowledge areas.
- Perform moderately complex analysis, calculations, design, evaluation, and inspection for specific areas of technical expertise which include Power, Lighting, Telecommunications, and Special Systems to support project objectives.
- Complete airfield electrical design for airfield development projects, including coordination, design, and layout of airfield ground lighting systems, signs, navigational aids, and airfield electrical vault equipment.
- Coordinate design scope with drawing legends, layout drawings, details, specifications, pay items, and takeoff estimates.
- Cross coordinate electrical designs with other disciplines and project elements such as pavement, marking, grading, drainage, etc to resolve design challenges, conflicts, and other concerns.
- Represent MBI with professionalism during internal and external meetings involving airfield electrical designs.
- Support the airfield electrical practice technical lead, engineers, and designers to develop and maintain department design standards.
- Perform other design and production tasks as assigned by manager or project leads.
- Occasional travel for project site visits may be required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate will be expected to demonstrate the following essential technical skills:
- Develop survey-accurate drawings in AutoCAD Civil 3D using pipe network structures, blocks, and other integrated features.
- Manage large sets of drawings and reference files in AutoCAD using Xref Manager, Sheet Set Manager, linked fields, layer management, and other integrated features.
- Develop accurate quantity takeoffs, estimates, and various calculations using Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and other tools.
- Develop professionally written, grammatically correct, spell-checked, technically accurate narratives, notes, and other written content in support of project deliverables.
- Find, Understand, and Apply FAA Advisory Circulars, FAA Engineering Briefs, FAA Orders, and other FAA Standards.
- Find, Understand, and Apply Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
- Find, Understand, and Apply NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) and other NFPA codes.
- Find, Understand, and Apply Building Codes such as IBC, IECC, and local amendments.
- Find, Understand, and Apply Client Guidelines and Design Requirements.
- Participate and Follow Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) Processes.
EDUCATION:
The candidate must meet the following required educational requirements for this position. Additional education is preferred.
- Required: Completion of 2-year Associate’s Degree from Technical College / Program or Certification
- Preferred: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering or Higher in engineering or related technical field from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET)
- Software: Microsoft Office Applications, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit (Preferred), Acuity Visual and / or AGI 32 Lighting Modeling and Calculation Software (Preferred), Bluebeam Revu (Preferred)
LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS:
- Preferred: Engineering Intern (EI) or Engineer In Training (EIT)
- Preferred: AAAE Airfield Certified Employee (ACE) in Airfield Lighting
EXPERIENCE:
- The candidate must meet the following experience requirements.
- Required: At least one (1) year of technical experience in the Architecture, Engineering, & Construction (AEC) industry.
- Preferred: At least two (2) years of experience with specific focus on applications dealing with airfield lighting design and/or construction.
