AI Engineer at the QNB Center for Business Innovation – Business Administration– Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Business Administration in Qatar is searching for a AI Engineer to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. The AI Engineer is the Center's dedicated technical practitioner. Working alongside faculty and the Center's leadership, the engineer designs and builds software that applies artificial intelligence to how business is taught, learned and practiced: interactive learning environments, simulations, decision and analysis tools, and whatever further forms prove useful as the technology and the field continue to converge.

The QNB Center for Business Innovation is a partnership between CMU-Q and Qatar National Bank, established to advance business learning and readiness in Qatar and the GCC through AI-enhanced education.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Designing and building AI-enabled software for teaching, learning and business education, from an initial concept through to systems in real use
  • Working directly with faculty and Center leadership to turn subject expertise and educational goals into specifications that can realistically be built, and advising when an idea should be reshaped or narrowed
  • Implementing and maintaining technical standards for the Center’s software in coordination with Computing Services: a single code repository, a shared model-access layer through which AI calls are routed, documentation practice, and interface text held separately from code so that bilingual versions can follow without rebuilding
  • Instrumenting software to capture evidence of its effect, and advising colleagues on what can usefully be measured
  • Running systems in production: deployment, monitoring, and responsiveness while they are in active use
  • Maintaining and improving systems over time, managing the running costs of AI model usage, and handling personal data and credentials to institutional standards
  • Following developments in applied AI and advising the Center on where new capabilities can be put to work
  • Providing day-to-day technical guidance to student developers and reviewing their work
  • Providing technical input to the Center's planning and project assessments
  • Developing documentation, guides, and workshops to help use the Center's tools

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

·        Interpersonal Skills: Works effectively with individuals across different roles, backgrounds, cultures, and levels of the university. Contributes positively to team goals and relationships.

·        Organization and Planning Skills: Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, deadlines, and competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and quality.

·        Problem Solving and Reasoning Skills: Anticipates needs, identifies potential challenges, takes initiative, and seeks appropriate solutions with minimal supervision.

·        Communication: Communicates clearly, professionally, and respectfully in person, by telephone, and in writing. Demonstrates strong listening skills and adapts communication to different audiences.

·        Collaboration and Teamwork: Demonstrates a genuine commitment to supporting students and creating a positive experience for individuals interacting with the department.

·        Adaptability: Remains calm and effective in a fast-paced environment where priorities and circumstances may change quickly.

·        Attention to Detail: Produces accurate, thorough, and timely work while recognizing the importance of details in administrative processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering or a related field.
  • At least three years of professional software development experience, including at least one application built on large language models and taken into real use
  • Demonstrated ability to build complete, working products rather than prototypes, including front-end web development sufficient to produce interfaces that non-technical users operate unaided
  • Practical experience with prompt and agent design, retrieval over documents and structured data, model evaluation, and guardrails for user-facing AI systems
  • Deployment and operational competence: hosting, release process, monitoring, and the judgment to keep software running reliably over sustained periods of use
  • Sound practice in handling personal data and credentials, including access control and secrets management, and a working understanding of an institution's obligations around personal records
  • Ability to build to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards
  • Ability to work closely with subject-matter experts who are not technical, translate their goals into a specification, and say clearly and constructively when a proposed design will not achieve what they want
  • Disciplined use of version control, code review and documentation, given that what is built must outlive the projects that created it

Preferred qualifications:

·        Master's degree preferred

·        Experience in educational technology, learning analytics, or building software used in teaching

·        Experience monitoring and helping to manage the running cost of large language model workloads, through caching, model selection and routing

·        Experience building for concentrated demand, where many users work with a system at the same time: concurrency, provider rate limits, and graceful behavior when an upstream model is slow or unavailable

·        Experience instrumenting software to capture usage data, and comfort working with the resulting data

·        Experience integrating software with institutional systems, including single sign-on and, ideally, a learning management system through LTI or equivalent

·        Experience mentoring junior developers or student staff

Requirements:

·        Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

Interested candidates must submit the following documents to be considered for the position:

·        A cover letter specifying how your qualifications match the job description.

·        Curriculum vitae.

·        A portfolio, repository or other evidence of software you have built and taken into real use. Where the work is not public, a written description of your specific contribution is acceptable.

·        Contact information of two references.

Additional Information:

·        The position, based in Doha, Qatar, will begin with a three-month contract, with the potential to transition to a one-year contract.

·        Typical Work Schedule: Sunday-Thursday, 8:30-5:00pm. An alternate work schedule allowing for evening and weekend hours will be required on occasion.
