The Role

The role also involves application development, infrastructure work, clear communication with nontechnical colleagues, and learning insurance processes.

United Risk is a global property and casualty insurance underwriting and distribution platform. It is independently owned and operated by its practice partners and affiliated with Applied Underwriters. Our practices cover specialty casualty and property, surety, financial lines, aviation, crisis and political risk, marine, fine art and more. Each one is led by underwriters who run their specialty with real autonomy.

Our AI team builds the tools that make those underwriters quicker and smarter. That includes submission ingestion, underwriting workbenches, risk analysis, and automation across the back and middle office. Our focus is to deliver tailored solutions to improve efficiency, while also maintaining our standards to security and compliance.

The Role:

You'll be one of a small group of AI Engineers. You'll work directly with underwriters and operations staff. You'll adapt the products we already run to their needs, and build new ones where nothing fits.

This role leans toward data science: turning our submission, policy and loss data into insight underwriters can act on. Everyone on the team also builds applications and works on infrastructure. Three senior AI engineers review your work and teach you along the way.

Requirements:

    • A bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or a related field
    • 0–4 years of experience, including internships and co-ops
    • Strong Python and SQL, and comfort with messy real-world data
    • A grounding in statistics
    • Work you built yourself and can show us. For this role, that means one or more of:
      • A structured-extraction or document-processing project
      • A RAG or document Q&A system
      • An evaluation or testing setup for model or LLM output
      • A data analysis or modeling project on a real dataset
      • Curiosity about how the business runs, and the patience to learn insurance from the people who know it
      • Clear communication with non-technical colleagues

Our Benefits Include:

  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees.
  • 401(k) plan with 100% immediate vesting and a 4% company match.
  • Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays.
  • Life, disability, critical illness and accident insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Pre-tax Flexible Spending Accounts for health, dependent care, and commuter-related expenses.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Fitness reimbursement and various additional quality-of-life benefits.

How to apply

Apply through this posting with your résumé and a link to your GitHub, a deployed app or a portfolio. We review portfolios first. If you're shortlisted, you'll walk one of our senior engineers through a project you built and the choices you made.
