What is a day in the life of an AI Automation Engineer?
- Developing AI workflows and agentic patterns, using platforms like n8n, MCP, and other agentic frameworks and services. These solutions will directly enhance customer service operations—such as automating ticket routing, streamlining inquiry responses, or providing real-time agent assistance.
- You will be tasked to venture beyond the foundational AI layer and assist with building and fixing AI workflows and agentic patterns that solve problems across Pattern. This includes identifying friction points in customer interactions and building scalable AI-driven solutions to improve satisfaction and efficiency.
- In other cases, you’ll operate as an advisor for others who are building those AI workflows, providing guidance on how the foundational AI layer works and advising on best practices. You’ll act as an internal consultant—helping teams design their own AI-powered tools while ensuring they align with best practices.
- Training and creating educational resources for the company.
- Hold training sessions with other teams and introduce them to new tools and best practices.
- Create documentation and training materials to help people quickly learn how to use AI tools that you build and maintain.
- Add functionality to our internal chat site, powered by Open WebUI.
- Develop new experimental features and integrations.
- Identify successful features and help migrate them into more stable applications across Pattern.
- Maintain and expand our FastAPI proxy gateway router that connects to external AI providers, and associated SDK.
- Improve the reliability of the platform by fixing bugs, adding fallback functionality, etc.
- Expand the number of models and providers available in the platform.
- Widen the range of functionality offered by the platform with greater levels of control and flexibility.
What will I need to thrive in this role?
- 3-5 years of post-college experience beyond internships in AI engineering roles at US firms.
- Specialized experience in Customer Service + Back Office solutions: designing, deploying, and optimizing AI-driven workflows that enhance support teams and customer experiences (e.g., intelligent chatbots, automated ticket triage, voice AI, or agent-assist tools).
- An absolute obsession with learning about LLMs and AIs, balanced with an understanding of when NOT to use LLMs to solve problems (using AI as an accelerant vs as a crutch).
- Strong python programming skills, helpful if familiar with libraries such as FastAPI, Pydantic, Streamlit, etc.
- JSON-native: comfortable designing/validating schemas, building reliable (de)serialization pipelines (e.g., Pydantic/FastAPI), and debugging messy real-world payloads across APIs and event queues.
- Good grasp of core software engineering principles such as SOLID, CI/CD, type checking and linting, etc.
- Understand cloud architecture in AWS (S3, DynamoDB, RDS, ECS/EC2, etc).
- Experience with generative AI platforms and tools—for example: model providers like OpenAI (e.g., GPT models), Anthropic (Claude), AWS Bedrock; and developer tools such as Cursor (AI-powered code editor)
What does high performance look like?
- You follow through with all assignments in a timely manner.
- You give 100% to all tasks and projects you are given.
- You actively comment and participate in group collaborations.
- You will take full ownership of your projects and follow through to completion.
- You proactively identify areas of opportunity and work cross functionally to execute on them.
