Educational Talent Search, a federally funded TRIO program, is designed to assist middle school and high school students from first generation and low-income backgrounds to complete secondary school and enter postsecondary education programs. Program services include group and individual counseling, academic advising and support, exposure to career and educational opportunities, and personal enrichment events. The target area for the program includes 7 high schools and 4 middle schools in Larimer, Weld, Morgan, and Adams counties.
The Advisor for the Educational Talent Search program in the Access Center is responsible for group and individual student advising related to applying to and persisting in postsecondary education. The Advisor reports to the Director of TRIO Educational Talent Search.
The Advisor will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening hours, weekends, and requires substantial travel within the state and out-of-state in the summer.
Essential Job Duties:
- Manage a medium-to-large student caseload, providing counseling, assessment, information, workshops, leadership development, cultural enrichment, and other support services.
- Plan and implement engaging workshops and programming throughout the academic year and summer programs, including parent workshops and student activities.
- Recruit eligible participants and maintain a strong waitlist of qualified prospective students.
- Plan, implement, and supervise one- and multiple-day college, educational, and career site visits to provide regional and national cultural, educational, and career exposure.
- Participate in planning and implementing summer residential programs on the university campus and support Talent Search and Access Center initiatives, meetings, retreats, committees, and collaborative activities.
- Develop and maintain academic and career resource networks and connect students with appropriate resources based on individual needs.
- Participate in program planning, professional development, conferences, training, and staff development opportunities.
- Maintain reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license; travel extensively within the target area, including to target schools up to four days per week, and work evenings, weekends, and overnight events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education, experiential learning or other related field (achieved by hire date).
- At least one year experience advising, supervising and/or mentoring first generation and low income middle or high school youth in an educational setting.
Minimum Required Degree:
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education, experiential learning or other related field (achieved by hire date).
Minimum Years of Experience and/or Skills:
- One year of relevant professional experience (required with a Bachelor’s degree; not required with a Master’s degree).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to facilitate middle and/or high school student learning through academic and student development activities and workshops.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills (including ability to present effectively, write clearly, and demonstrate proficient use of computer applications).
- Experience with Establishing and maintaining appropriate classroom and workshop setting through the use of effective classroom management skills and interactive engagement strategies.
- Experience in building professional relationships including the ability to develop and maintain relationships between and amongst the program, community and target schools.
- Experience in building community networks in support of student success.
- Experience in a variety of research-based education strategies (including technology) to accommodate multi-age/multi-level students.
- Record keeping and data management abilities such as: maintaining records regarding program activities and student eligibility and performance and submitting reports regarding student outcomes.
- Experience working with target population including middle school and high school students from first-generation/ low-income communities.
- Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) desirable.
