Our Trainee Program is an 18-month program beginning in July 2027 designed to equip you with the essential business and technical skills needed to build a successful career in insurance. As an Actuarial Trainee you will receive hands-on training by working closely with highly experienced actuaries, gaining in-depth knowledge of the organization's business units and pricing philosophy. The program combines on-the-job learning, workplace mentoring, and directed self-study, providing a robust foundation for a career as an actuary. Location: This position will be based out of our New York, NY office. Our Trainees work directly on pricing projects, building relationships and identifying underwriting and customers’ needs. This rigorous curriculum also includes training in negotiation, risk analysis and relationship management. On-The-Job Learning Participants receive training in pricing deals across various lines of business, developing the requisite skillset while fostering interaction with other actuaries and underwriters. They also gain a specialized exposure in a particular line of business to enhance their understanding of specific products, and the metrics used to evaluate portfolios. The curriculum includes training in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL. Directed Self-Study Professional designation courses give new Trainees professionals technical knowledge of insurance operations and industry practices. Qualifications, Skills and Experience Sompo employees are some of the best and brightest in the industry. When recruiting the next generation of Sompo employees, we consider graduating Seniors, and recent college graduates with previous internship experience working in insurance, financial services, marketing or sales. Additional requirements include: • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a STEM major (e.g., Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Statistics, Engineering, etc.) and strong academic performance • Graduation date between May 2026 and May 2027 • Successfully passed and/or be sitting for at least one CAS Exam • Genuine interest in developing a career in the insurance industry • Ability to articulate ideas clearly through written and verbal communication • Solution-oriented mindset and data analytical skills • Ability to work independently and collaborate with others • Adaptability to new challenges and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment • Demonstrates integrity and reliability in fulfilling roles and responsibilities • Detail-oriented, organized, and tech-savvy (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint) • Local to the desired office location or able to arrange housing and transportation in the area to support an in-office working arrangement while in the Trainee Program • Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without restriction Salary Range: $75,000 – $82,500. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
