POSITION SUMMARY:
The Accounting Manager – Insurance is responsible for the monthly close, Statutory and management report preparation and daily accounting tasks and reconciliations as well as valuable communication with various levels of customers and management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Executes and is primarily responsible for month-end close procedures, accounting journal entries, intercompany transactions and reconciliation of general ledger accounts on a timely and accurate basis for one or more of our insurance companies.
- Analyzes account balances, investigate unusual items and discrepancies, determine necessary adjustments and complete reconciliations of balance sheet accounts to maintain proper up-to-date supported account balances
- Leads in the preparation of monthly internal financial statements and various Statutory statement filings with respective state regulators. This includes schedule preparation and review for the Annual Statement and Quarterly filings.
- Assist in identifying manual processes for automation to improve efficiency. Identify process improvement opportunities, including those related to automation using available technologies
- Assists in the design, documentation and implementation of processes and controls and key metrics required for internal and external audits as well as be responsible for all SOX controls assigned.
- Refines and manages the control process ensuring all significant balance sheet and income statement accounts are reconciled and thoroughly reviewed monthly
- Assists with the annual audit and quarterly review process and works closely with external auditors to complete audits and reviews
- Collaborates with other accounting team members and the broader accounting team on project goals
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, participating in professional societies
- Mentors accounting staff and business users on Microsoft GP, Prospero, W-Desk and accounting concepts, techniques, technology and processes
- Performs other activities, duties and assignments as needed or requested
Requirements
- Insurance Accounting experience required
- Experience leading a team of at least 3 required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field or equivalent experience
- 7+ years’ progressive accounting responsibility; working with a general ledger package; working with transactional and subledger systems; month-end close and financial statement preparation
- Ability to manage/supervise and develop staff level employees
- Experience in troubleshooting and resolving reconciliation, ledger and reporting issues
- Ability to multi-task and learn quickly
- Ability to self-start and research independently
- Ability to handle and resolve conflicts in a professional, tactful manner
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong sense of accountability, comfortable making recommendations and taking accountability for outcomes
- Working knowledge of transactional systems such as Microsoft GP, Prospero, Power BI, and Sapiens
- Knowledge of best internal control practices and GAAP
- Ability to meet deadlines in a multi-priority, fast-paced environment both independently and within a team environment
- Ability to identify and define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and recommend solutions
- Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Intermediate to Advanced skills in Excel
