Job Description SummaryOrganizational Summary Statement:
Under supervision of Department's Payroll Manager, performs complex accounting or clerical tasks to support all payroll-related activities for assigned unit(s) which may employee 200-400 staff (non-exempt, contingent, and student) with a payroll budget of $2M-$4.5M annually. Activities include appointments and terminations each semester, pay adjustments, time entry adjustments, and timesheet corrections. Assist employees with retrieving pay stubs, completing payroll forms, establishing direct deposit, registering for parking, accessing their timesheets and with other general payroll and benefits questions. Enroll employees in payroll deduction for meals. Provide labor analysis and reporting to unit administrators. Maintain office supply inventory for assigned unit(s) and procure additional items as requested following established procedures.
Physical Demands:
Incumbent will work for significant periods of time in front of a computer, and will need to bend and stoop to file documents. Will need to physically visit campus locations to meet with staff, provide coverage in other units, and attend/conduct training or onboarding. May need to lift small boxes (less than 30 lbs.) of forms, booklets or other written materials to be distributed to the unit's employees.
This is an essential position and incumbent must report to work when the campus is closed due to weather or other emergency situations. Must be able to work a variable schedule including weekends, nights, evenings and holidays. Annual leave will not be granted for specific periods including the weeks preceding and right after the start of each semester, football weekends, Maryland Day, Family weekend or special events. Must have manual dexterity to operate equipment with or without accommodation and to lift up to 15 lbs. regularly. The University of Maryland is a non smoking campus.

Minimum QualificationsBachelors degree in accounting or related field with a minimum of nine credits in Accounting. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferences:

Thorough knowledge of payroll and human resources practices and procedures: of basic mathematics including ratios and percentages; of modern office practices, procedures, systems, and equipment. Skill in the use of keyboards, automated systems, computers and related software to facilitate assigned work; in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to understand and interpret payroll and human resources policies and procedures; to provide guidance and training to others; to maintain poise and courtesy under pressure; to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact, to accurately perform mathematical computations; to operate standard office equipment.

Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field preferred.

Experience with Workday, UKG, or relevant payroll experience in a University environment, is strongly preferred.

Fluency in another language is strongly preferred.
