The Academic Support Lead in English, specifically for the Reading and Writing Lab, performs the duties of a Learning Support Specialist. The Academic Support Lead tutors in-person and works with students, faculty, and staff, either one-on-one or in small groups, to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. This position works with multiple students and with other tutors present, in a shared tutoring space. The Academic Support Lead provides general administrative, clerical, and project support for the Reading and Writing Lab, as well as helping with the training and support of Reading and Writing Lab staff. The incumbent must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a variety of methods and teaching tools.
The Reading and Writing Lab is open for service Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There is an expectation that the Academic Support Lead will work some evening and Saturday hours.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Tutoring

  • Supplements the understanding and command of developmental reading and writing for which the students, faculty, and staff are seeking assistance.

  • Tutors for developmental level courses in discipline area of expertise only.

  • Helps students to develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills.

  • Meets with students and faculty for walk-in and scheduled appointment times.

  •  Collaborates with college instructors to generate participation in tutoring and

  • follows up with students that instructors have engaged in tutoring to identify additional academic needs and provide support, if necessary.

Administrative/ Clerical/Project Support

  • Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions.

  • Assists with the scheduling of appointments and the monitoring of the Reading and Writing Lab phone, if applicable.

  • Helps with maintenance of tutoring schedule with Site Coordinator(s).

  • Generates department reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of tutoring interactions.

  •  Assists with Reading and Writing Lab programming, outreach, marketing, and updating of the website and Blackboard organization.

  • Provides course instructor(s) with communication/information that can be used to facilitate student learning of course content.

  • Maintains and organizes tutoring documents and materials, ordering copies when needed.

  •  Organizes the ordering and storing of office supplies as needed. Initiates work orders such as housekeeping, general maintenance, etc. and follows through until completion.

  •  Advanced use and implementation of the College’s tutoring software.

Continuous Learning & Mentoring

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles.

  • Attends tutor training sessions and professional development that benefit the Reading and Writing Lab, its staff and visitors.

  • Provides training and support to LSS, LSS II, Peer Tutors and Supplemental Instructional Leaders.

  • Assists with planning of staff meetings and professional development for Reading and Writing Lab staff.

  • Assists with technical support of tutoring software and reports.

  • Works in close collaboration with academic department leadership and faculty leads on Reading and Writing Lab content.

  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends all required departmental meetings and trainings.

  • Holds special study sessions upon the request of instructors, students, Departmental English Lead Faculty, or

  • Department Chair.

  • Other duties as required.

*Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field.
  • One (1) year of experience of developmental reading and writing tutoring or teaching.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

*An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office and classroom working environment.
