Key Responsibilities
Assist in navigation, cargo and ballast handling, mooring, and anchoring operations. Carry out deck maintenance and housekeeping tasks as assigned, ensuring equipment readiness by providing assistance. Comply with safety, environmental, and security procedures and regulations.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Knowledge: The AB must be familiar with company policies, SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag state regulations. Key knowledge areas include the Theory and Practice of Seamanship, use and upkeep of firefighting and lifesaving appliances (FFA and LSA), emergency procedures, risk assessment, and hazard identification. Essential knowledge also includes maintenance tasks, operating deck machinery, waste management, pollution control, and mooring operations.
Essential Skills and Abilities: Effective communication and reporting skills are essential for the AB, along with the ability to operate, maintain, and assist in repairing deck equipment. Proficiency in anchoring, mooring, and ropework, including knots and splices, is crucial. Time management skills, prioritization, and a commitment to high standards of cosmetic maintenance and housekeeping are also required. Competence as a helmsman is essential.
Experience: Demonstrates reliability and leadership behaviors as an effective bridge team member, proficient in lookout, reporting, and helmsman duties. Shows a high level of reliability in deck operations, including the use of deck machinery, rigging, and cargo handling. Maintains the deck in good working condition, including cosmetic maintenance, and demonstrates seamanship skills in rope work and handling various types of lines, cables, and wires.
