Essential Requirements:
•Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician) accredited by the relevant body under the Department of Higher Education and Training.
•Be in possession of a NTC4 in Electrical Engineering from a Further Education and Training College, registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
•Must be a competent person in all three competency areas, namely OHM, UGM and Substations applicable to the MV/LV Operations divisions or all three competency areas applicable to the HV Cables branch or HV Substations branch.
•Must be an authorised person to operate on eThekwini’s Energy Management Directorate’s Medium Voltage Networks, without restrictions.
•Must be in possession of Learning Facilitator and Assessor certificates accredited by the approved Education, Training and Development Authority.
•Pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge of Construction, Operations and Maintenance of Distribution and/or Transmission systems and ability to impact knowledge to learners.
•Valid motor vehicle driving license.
•Valid First Aid certificate or be trained within 6 months from date of appointment.
•Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) or obtain one within 6 months from date of appointment. to undergoing the trade test.
•Apprentice route: Must provide documented proof of having served a recognised apprenticeship prior to undergoing the trade test.
•APRL route: Must provide documented proof of at least 3 years relevant practical experience at the level of an Electrician and working under the direct supervision of a competent Electrician, in diverse aspects of Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of Distribution and/or Transmission Networks prior to undergoing the trade test.
•5 years post trade test experience in all aspects of Electrical Reticulation, including switching, isolating, testing and earthing of main and apparatus operating at voltages
ranging from 230 V to 11000 V, which must include 1 year experience as a competent person (OHM or UGM or Substations).
Preferred Requirements:
•Must be an Authorised person to operate on eThekwini’s Energy Management Directorate’s High Voltage Network of up to 275 000 V without restrictions.
•Must be in possession of a Learning Moderator certificate accredited by the approved Education, Training and Development Authority.
Special Conditions:
•40 hours, 5-day week.
•Incumbents must be prepared to work overtime when required to meet the exigencies of the service.
•Protective clothing as per the PPE schedule.
Physical Requirements:
1. Must be physically capable of carrying out all the duties of the post.
2. Must be physically fit and in good health as determined by the City Medical Officer of Health.
3. Must not be colour blind.
4. Must be able to physically capable to manhandle electrical equipment and apparatus.
5. Must have the necessary dexterity to work with tools and instruments.

- Valid Professional Driving Permit, or obtain one within six months of appointment.
- Documented proof of a recognized apprenticeship before undergoing the trade test, where applicable.
- APRL route candidates must provide documented proof of at least three years of relevant practical electrician experience under direct supervision.
- At least five years of post-trade-test experience in electrical reticulation, including switching, isolating, testing, and earthing equipment from 230 V to 11,000 V.
- At least one year of experience as a competent person in OHM, UGM, or Substations.
- Authorization without restrictions to operate on high-voltage networks up to 275,000 V.
- Accredited Learning Moderator certificate.
