Summary:

Under the direction of Youth & Camp Director, the Inclusion Camp Specialist will be responsible for supporting the needs of children and their families at Camp Shalom. They will oversee and implement the Chaverim Inclusion Program as part of Camp Shalom working in collaboration with the Camp Administration Team, counselors, and participants. Their role includes working with families, assisting in the hiring of Inclusion Counselors, supervision and training of staff and implementation of the program. This position will start in the spring with limited hours (approximately 10-20 hours a week) February-May then 40 hours per week during the summer season.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Youth & Camp Director and marketing to communicate with local school districts, parent groups, funders, and with prospective participants about the Chaverim Inclusion Program.
  • Actively facilitates camper development in outdoor recreation activities, social skill development, values, multi-cultural and environmental awareness.
  • Function as an advocate for youth in the Chaverim program by speaking with families and all campers about inclusive environments.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and conduct with the staff team as a role model.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers of all ages, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior and use positive behavior management techniques, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, good sportsmanship, and self-control.
  • Adapt and individualize activities to the specific needs of camper and their 1:1 advocate.
  • Understand and implement the behavior/care plan specific to include but not limited to ability, behaviors, restroom, pool and physical and/or cognitive aides.
  • Assist the general camp counselors and campers to adapt materials and activities to be inclusive as often as needed, for campers in the inclusion program, and those not specifically in the inclusion program.
  • Be prompt to all work assignments and adhere to the day camp daily schedule and operating calendar.
  • Enforces and adheres to camp procedures and policies, and daily operating schedule.
  • Maintains all camp equipment and supplies.

Chaverim Inclusion Program Management and Oversight:

  • Collaborate with Youth & Camp Director to seamlessly work with summer camp program and staff to best support youth.
  • Assist in interviewing and hiring inclusion staff. Pair campers and counselors and coordinate pre-camp meetups and develop individual guides for each camper.
  • Develop and provide ongoing training for inclusion counselors and inclusion training for general camp staff.
  • Support Inclusion Campers and Counselors on a daily basis. 
  • Work with general camp counselors to create inclusive, age appropriate, fun, and safe spaces/programming.
  • Adhere to and be knowledgeable of ACA (American Camp Association) Standards and compliance.
  • Assist Youth & Camp Director in carrying out all policies and procedures of Jewish Silicon Valley, the APJCC and the Levi Family Campus 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Camp Leadership.

Additional Functions

  • Assist with purchasing materials, books, and special equipment for the Inclusion program.
  • Gather and distribute resources for the staff related to inclusion and special needs. 
  • Maintain up to date records, children’s files, and data. Prepare and submit reports as required and in a timely manner. 
  • Interact positively with all clientele, board members and staff at all times.
  • Maintain and support all camp policies. Provide friendly, courteous, and helpful customer service.
  • Develop a positive work relationship with coworkers. 
  • Follow JSV personnel policies as stated in the employee handbooks.
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as required by management and as business dictates.

Qualifications:

  • Available to work non–traditional business hours; may require some evening and weekend work.
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, or related field.
  • Experience in a camp, recreation and/or school settings preferred.
  • Experience with staff supervision and training
  • Demonstrate good character, integrity, professionalism, and trust with confidential information.
  • Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic.
  • Must be articulate and possess excellent customer service skills, as well as communication skills both orally and written.
  • Must proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, and Publisher), in addition willingness to learn new systems; possess basic office skills
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid CPR/AED and first aid certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus.
  • Must possess a valid Driver License
  • Employees at JSV may have availability to attend in-house Certification courses, please check with Camp Director as to availability.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must possess the ability to make sound independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

 

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations.

  • Ability to support campers change of clothes and application of sunscreen.
  • Understand and adhere to privacy policies.
  • Ability to assist campers in and around the pool (not Lifeguard)
  • Ability to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Also required to climb, push, and pull. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or physically support campers as needed.
  • Ability to work both in an outside and inside environment, different temperature extremes, and terrains.

This position is contingent upon completion and clearance of a background fingerprint assessment.
