Two-year apprentice position developing traditional wooden boatbuilding, restoration, maintenance, and maritime trade skills. Responsibilities include assisting shipwrights with historic vessel maintenance, hauling vessels, building blocking and cradles, supporting mechanical maintenance, participating in public education programs, and completing 4,000 Maryland apprenticeship training hours. The role requires safe tool use, physical labor in varied weather, teamwork, public engagement, and occasional evening, weekend, holiday, and special-event work.

Provides high-level administrative support to the President and CEO, including calendar management, executive communications, meeting coordination, Board and committee governance, records maintenance, travel and expense coordination, donor and advancement support, and organizational initiatives. The role serves as a liaison among executives, Board members, staff, donors, volunteers, and stakeholders while tracking commitments and maintaining confidentiality. Regular on-site attendance is required, with occasional evening and weekend work.

The Shipwright Educator manages CBMM’s two-year shipwright apprenticeship program, including apprentice selection, curriculum development, scheduling, evaluation, housing oversight, and Department of Labor documentation. The role also performs traditional wooden boat construction, restoration, maintenance, and repair; teaches apprentices and adult education classes; supports shipyard programming and guest interpretation; manages safety, cleanliness, budgets, and public-facing operations.
