Amanda Murray, senior manager of people operations at Wasabi Technologies, said her employer doesn’t leave pay equity up to chance.

“We conduct annual compensation studies using third-party data to benchmark our roles against industry standards,” Murray said. “That data helps us establish pay bands that reflect current market conditions across geographies and functions.”

In addition to competitive, fair pay, Murray said Wasabi has another secret ingredient to employee happiness: flexibility.

“Employees who feel they have the autonomy to manage their own schedules tend to report higher engagement and a stronger intent to stay, which has a meaningful impact on both retention and culture,” Murray said.

Between the flexible workplace and a pay structure with regular assessments, it’s easy to see how Wasabi Technologies has an employee retention rate of 91 percent.

Built In spoke with Murray in detail about the perks that keep employees engaged and retention high at Wasabi Technologies.

How does your employer ensure its pay and bonus plans are competitive?

To ensure Wasabi’s pay and bonus plans remain aligned with the market, we conduct annual compensation studies using third-party data to benchmark our roles against industry standards. That data helps us establish pay bands that reflect current market conditions across geographies and functions.

Individual compensation is determined based on factors such as experience, skills, location and internal parity. Base pay is one part of our broader total rewards approach, which can also include bonus and variable compensation opportunities such as equity and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support both professional growth and personal well-being.

How does Wasabi Technologies determine salaries?

“Individual compensation is determined based on factors such as experience, skills, location and internal parity. Base pay is one part of our broader total rewards approach, which can also include bonus and variable compensation opportunities such as equity and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support both professional growth and personal well-being.”

We review compensation regularly to ensure employees are positioned appropriately within those bands based on experience, performance, and scope of responsibility while maintaining internal equity.

Which benefit delivers the most value — and how do you know?

Flexible schedules and our remote work model are two benefits that consistently deliver the most value at Wasabi, and our employee feedback reflects that clearly. In our most recent engagement survey, 95 percent of employees responded favorably to the statement: “I have the flexibility I need to balance my work and personal life.”

Given Wasabi’s employee retention rate of 91 percent, we also see a strong connection between flexibility and employee engagement. Employees who feel they have the autonomy to manage their own schedules tend to report higher engagement and a stronger intent to stay, which has a meaningful impact on both retention and culture.

Our remote-first approach allows us to hire great talent regardless of location, and removing the constraints of a daily commute gives people more control over how and when they do their best work.

Flexibility is all about trust. When employees are empowered to manage their work in a way that fits into their lives, they show up with a strong sense of ownership and commitment. That balance between autonomy and accountability has become an important part of how we support both performance and well-being.

Does your employer offer stock or equity, and is it considered competitive?

Wasabi is a privately held company that grants stock options to full-time team members at the time of hire, providing the opportunity to participate in the company’s long-term growth. We view equity as a compelling and valuable component of our overall compensation package.

Employees are also provided with clear documentation and resources explaining how stock options work, what vesting means, and how exercising options fits into broader financial planning, helping to ensure they feel informed and confident in understanding their equity awards.
