OpenAI has announced a major partnership with semiconductor company Broadcom to co-develop custom AI accelerators and systems capable of delivering up to 10 gigawatts of computing power, according to a news release.
This effort builds on a long-standing relationship between the two companies and complements OpenAI’s recent work with other tech firms, including Nvidia and Oracle.
OpenAI said that by designing its chips and systems, it can embed insights from its existing AI models directly into the hardware, which will be deployed across its facilities and partner data centers using Broadcom’s Ethernet and connectivity solutions to scale globally.
“Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses. Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI to provide benefits to all humanity,” Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said in the news release.
While financial details weren’t disclosed, sources told The Wall Street Journal the deal is worth several billion dollars.
Broadcom’s stock rose nearly 10 percent following the announcement, which highlights its focus on custom AI chips and the preference for Ethernet as the networking standard in large-scale AI data centers.
