One thing that sets Chicago Tech apart from many local high schools is the close ties it has fostered with the local tech industry, including field trips, CEO/CIO visits, joint projects, summer jobs and internships, so that students are exposed to a variety of businesses and professionals. The Generation Tech mentorship program is designed to augment those industry relationships by providing students with an additional, and critical, one-to-one relationship with a business professional who takes a personal interest in them and their progress towards that world of work.
We are looking to expand the program to our remaining junior class in the fall.
Here is some key information about the mentorship program –
- Mentors and students will fill out similar surveys to determine good matching candidates based on career interest/experience and hobbies.
- We expect that you contact your student a minimum of twice a month by phone, text or email, whichever works best for you and your mentee.
- We also encourage in-person meetings with your mentee monthly - your student could visit you at your workplace, you could meet at Chicago Tech Academy, or in a neutral location.
- Additionally, the Generation Tech Mentor program will be hosting multiple group events to facilitate relationship building.
- We expect your methods of interaction to evolve over time and will need to take into account both of your schedules.
- The initial commitment we're looking for is a year. Ideally, we'd like a mentor to remain with a student throughout their high school stay.
- There will be an orientation session to introduce the parameters of the program, further highlight our expectations, and provide resources for your mentoring relationship in early September.
- A background check is required for all mentors. Cost is covered by Chicago Tech Academy.
- The Mentor coordinator will be in touch with both mentor and mentee to monitor progress and provide support.
