Who wants to join a team that doesn’t work well together?

Like group projects assigned to students in class, finding workplace success depends on the team’s ability to work together. As many students learn in high school and college, certain types of people naturally work together well, but those serendipitous groupings can be few and far between. Instead, group work is easier when everyone models the supportive, professional behavior of an ideal collaborator.

Collaboration skills are especially important in a modern office, where “group projects” are an everyday occurrence. Additionally, the majority of employees view a team with good collaboration as extremely beneficial in numerous ways. According to Alludo’s State of Collaboration Survey, over half of employees believe that better collaboration positively impacts productivity, engagement, creativity, business growth and overall morale.

As candidates comb online spaces to seek out new work opportunities, companies with a strong collaborative culture are worth keeping in mind. To help make the search easier, Built In spoke with representatives from seven companies with open roles and a team culture that employees rave about.

Rob Austin-Williams
Head of Marketing, SMB • Enova

Enova International is a financial technology company that provides financial services via its machine learning-powered lending platform.

Describe Enova’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

“Determined.” Our team is relentlessly focused on achieving excellence while fostering a culture of innovation and experimentation. This determination enables us to solve both immediate challenges and future opportunities. We’re committed to empowering small business owners by helping them access the funding they need — whether it’s bridging cash flow gaps, investing in new equipment or scaling for their next growth phase.

For instance, our team is actively working to provide customers with tailored content and a simplified journey to securing the capital they need to grow their business. As a result of our collaboration across teams and testing of new approaches, customers are more seamlessly starting their application process, which means they’re able to more efficiently get the funding they need and get back to focusing on their business. This relentless focus on solving tough challenges and enhancing the customer journey embodies the determined spirit of our culture.

How long have you been with Enova, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with Enova for four months, and the growth and learning have been incredibly rapid. I’m fortunate to be supported by a CMO and small business leadership team who make themselves highly available, offering invaluable historical insights while remaining forward-focused on growth. Their approach fosters an environment where I’m encouraged to explore new opportunities, channels and approaches and tackle challenges head-on. This has been critical in my development with the team.

“Enova’s approach fosters an environment where I’m encouraged to explore new opportunities, channels and approaches and tackle challenges head-on.”

In this short time, I’ve gained a deep understanding of the unique gaps and opportunities within the small business lending space. I’m particularly focused on identifying the key obstacles small business owners face when trying to access funding to grow, and how we can better support them — no matter the stage of their journey. For example, during sales call shadowing, I learned firsthand how critical speed and clarity are in the decision-making process for small business owners seeking funding. This has anchored the voice of our customers in my mind, broadened my perspective and made me even more passionate about helping their businesses succeed.

Alex Gomez
Claims Manager - Commercial Auto • Pie Insurance

Pie Insurance is an insurance technology company dedicated to transforming small business insurance.

Describe Pie Insurance’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

“Curiosity.” Curiosity drives everything we do at Pie. It’s the foundation of our test-and-learn approach. Our team embraces every challenge as an opportunity to think creatively, leverage individual expertise and collaborate across the business. Whether your expertise lies in claims learning and development, workers’ compensation or commercial auto, no question is off-limits. It’s this spirit of curiosity and challenge that fuels our progress.

“Curiosity drives everything we do at Pie. It’s the foundation of our test-and-learn approach.”

For example, when building our claims team from the ground up, we intentionally brought together individuals from diverse professional backgrounds. Instead of defaulting to “this is the way claims organizations have to operate,” we challenged the status quo at every turn. By leveraging technology and fresh perspectives, we have been able to streamline workflows, automate repetitive tasks and implement innovative tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.

This willingness to question traditional processes allowed us to build a strong foundation and positioned us as a forward-thinking team, ready to adapt and excel in an ever-evolving industry. Our culture of curiosity ensures we continue to grow and push boundaries together.

How long have you been with Pie Insurance, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with Pie since February 2022, and the professional growth I’ve experienced has been fulfilling. When I started, there were just five people on the claims team, and I’ve had the privilege of contributing to its expansion to over 45 Pie-oneers and growing.

One significant area of development has been my ability to grow my understanding of different areas of insurance. While I had worked cross-functionally at past companies, this role has deepened my understanding. When I started, I was the sole commercial auto claims person and was part of a small, agile pod of teammates working collaboratively to launch the product from the ground up. This experience gave me valuable exposure to underwriting, product development and data analytics, sharpening my problem-solving skills and providing a deeper appreciation for how different areas of the company interact.

Over time, I took on multiple roles, including leading and supporting the development of the subrogation group and most recently, taking on vendor management. These opportunities have been instrumental in enhancing my growth mindset and flexibility, expanding my understanding of the broader insurance landscape.

Graham Idehen
General Manager - EMEA • Dscout

Experience research platform Dscout helps customers gather, manage, share and analyze content.

Describe Dscout’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

I would choose “caring” because it reflects the empathy, strong connections and desire to show up for each other every day that define the Dscout EMEA team. Our culture is built around supporting each other so that we succeed together.

This caring spirit was evident when two of my teammates, Tymmarah Anderson and Abby Raynor, were recognized for an internal company value award. They consistently go above and beyond in finding solutions to problems and in supporting colleagues. They do this not because they feel they have to, but because they genuinely want to.

The EMEA team’s success in 2024 is a testament to this caring culture. A strong partnership between sales and operations ensured customers were set up for success during every interaction with Dscout, from prospecting and evaluation to onboarding and long-term platform engagement.

At Dscout, caring deeply is more than a value — it’s how we collaborate, lift each other up and thrive as a team. Caring deeply helps to keep us motivated, with a purpose, and ready to tackle 2025, together.

“At Dscout, caring deeply is more than a value — it’s how we collaborate, lift each other up and thrive as a team.”

How long have you been with Dscout, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I joined Dscout in January 2023 and have had the privilege of working across multiple areas of the business, from participant acquisition to collaborating with new and prospective customers, supporting existing business and contributing to strategic planning for EMEA growth.

This broad exposure has sharpened my leadership skills, refined my ability to collaborate cross-functionally, and given me a holistic understanding of how different parts of the business work together to drive success. Each new challenge and opportunity has pushed me to grow, not just as a leader but also as a strategic thinker.

In January 2025, I was honored to be promoted to General Manager - EMEA, a testament to Dscout’s commitment to nurturing talent and creating an environment where individuals can thrive and take on new responsibilities. One of my primary responsibilities is overseeing the growth of a new international location as we expand our operational reach into other parts of the world. This new chapter of my journey at Dscout highlights the organization’s belief in empowering its people to take on impactful roles and continually grow both personally and professionally.

Lee Shemer
Head of Customer Success • Monte Carlo

As creators of the industry’s first end-to-end data observability platform, Monte Carlo helps businesses trust in their data and drive better decision-making with accurate and reliable data reporting.

Describe Monte Carlo’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

The word I would choose is “impact” or “impactful.” We chose “impact” because our company culture revolves around driving tangible outcomes in everything we do. This principle is foundational, shaping our actions, decisions and rewards. For example, with our clients, we don’t stop at ensuring software adoption. Instead, we focus on how our solutions drive measurable improvements in their business outcomes. Internally, we prioritize actions and allocate resources by evaluating the potential impact. When discussing projects, we ask, “What will this achieve, and who will benefit?” This ensures our energy is directed toward efforts that truly matter.

Focusing on impact fosters clarity, purpose and accountability within the team. It also builds a culture of ownership and pride, as everyone sees the meaningful difference their contributions make for the company, their colleagues and our clients. By putting impact at the center, we ensure our efforts consistently align with the outcomes that matter most.

How long have you been with Monte Carlo, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with the company for over three years, and one of the most impactful areas of growth I’ve experienced has been my ability to execute quickly. One of our core values at Monte Carlo is speed and prioritizing speed over perfection.

When I first joined, I was a new, overachieving and admittedly perfectionist employee who felt compelled to only deliver polished, “perfect” products whether it was presentations, models or insights. This led me to obsess over minor details, which ultimately delayed the value I could provide. Over time, I’ve embraced the philosophy of delivering fast, high-quality solutions and iterating based on feedback. This “ship and iterate” mindset has significantly improved my efficiency and effectiveness. It’s taught me to focus on what truly matters and to trust the process of refinement through collaboration.

“Monte Carlo’s values taught me to focus on what truly matters and to trust the process of refinement through collaboration.”

Additionally, I’ve become much better at giving and receiving feedback. I’m less afraid to make mistakes and more willing to take bold leaps, which has had a positive impact on both my work and personal growth.

Stephanie Aubert
Director, Talent Acquisition • Inato

Inato is a health technology company that helps connect clinical research centers to patients and trials around the world.

Describe Inato’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

Collaborative.” I chose this word because collaboration is central to how we operate and solve challenges together. Recently, we updated our cultural alignment assessment to reflect our revised operating principles. While I led the initiative, it was truly a team effort. I worked closely with hiring managers and team leads to ensure the updates aligned with our values and resonated with real-world scenarios.

“Collaboration is central to how we operate and solve challenges together.”

Now that the updated assessment has been implemented, I’m surveying hiring managers for feedback on how it’s performing in interviews and identifying further opportunities for improvement. This process of gathering input, making thoughtful adjustments and seeking continuous feedback reflects how collaboration drives our success and ensures that we’re hiring candidates who will thrive in our culture.

How long have you been with Inato, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with the company for three years, and in that time, I’ve continued to grow as a trusted partner to leadership in all things talent acquisition. My role covers every facet of attracting, hiring and retaining exceptional talent, including employer branding, talent attraction, interview training, learning and development, refining internal processes and overseeing our recruiting tech stack.

What I value most is the ability to identify opportunities and deliver strategic initiatives that drive the company forward. For instance, I’ve implemented tools to streamline hiring workflows and designed development programs to support our managers as they scale their teams. This level of ownership allows me to continuously expand my expertise while ensuring talent acquisition is a key driver of our company’s success. This desire to have a broad, meaningful impact is something we actively seek in all of our hires.

Martin Kang
Head of Engineering • Addition Wealth

Addition Wealth provides financial expertise to businesses and employees via the company’s personal finance platform.

Describe Addition Wealth’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word?

“Collaborative.” Our team thrives on working together, especially under tight timelines. In these moments, it’s inspiring to see how every member, across all functions, seamlessly switches into a collaborative mindset. Team members proactively step up, help each other and remove roadblocks to ensure progress. Like a series of dominos falling perfectly into place, everyone hustles and contributes their expertise to deliver exceptional results. This shared commitment to teamwork and problem-solving is what makes our collaboration so powerful, and it’s the reason we consistently go above and beyond for our users and clients. Without this spirit of collaboration, our success simply wouldn’t be possible.

“Like a series of dominos falling perfectly into place, everyone hustles and contributes their expertise to deliver exceptional results.”

How long have you been with Addition Wealth, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with the company for nine months, and time truly flies in a startup. I often say that one week in a startup feels like a month at a larger company, thanks to the sheer volume of learning, growth and results packed into each day.

As head of engineering, one of the most rewarding challenges has been fostering a strong engineering culture while staying laser-focused on delivering value to the business. While this isn’t a challenge unique to our team, it’s one I’ve found immensely interesting to tackle. Along the way, I’ve had opportunities to connect with engineering leaders at other companies, gaining valuable insights into how different organizations navigate similar challenges. My biggest area of growth has been learning to let go of preconceived notions and embracing new strategies with an open mind. The constant evolution and collaborative spirit at Addition make this a deeply fulfilling experience.
