Taking a walk during lunch? Here’s where you should go

Sad desk lunches can be a serious bummer, and spending an extra hour at work just to take a break can be kind of a drag. But who works 9-to-5 at a startup anyway? Chances are you’re already working more than 40 hours each week… and unless your company’s sprung for a fancy standing desk, you’re spending most of your time sitting.

Taking a walk during your lunch break has major benefits, and walking during calls is a good way to get a little exercise in while movin’ and shakin’. We picked some of our favorite jaunts through Boulder, Fort Collins and Denver to help you plan a route for your next walking lunch.

Amazing people watching, spring tulips and plenty of street fare make the Pearl Street Mall a natural suggestion for any working walk in Boulder. But as the weather improves, the Boulder Creek Path makes for a great location, too — and it stretches all the way from east Boulder to Boulder Canyon.

Fort Collins

Take a quick stroll through Old Town on your lunch break, checking out the public art or local stores. If you’re up for a longer jaunt, head over to The Oval at CSU — one of Fort Collins’ most beautiful spots, full of trees and open space in case you decide to turn your long walk into a cat nap.

Denver

Both the RiNo and Five Points neighborhoods are set up for an explorational art walk to provide stunning sights as you take a call or just a break. Since the area’s still developing, try to stick to alleys or along Larimer in Five Points since there isn’t a ton of sidewalk space.

Tons of startups are moving to the Union Station or Lower Highlands neighborhoods lately. Smack dab in the middle of both is a stretch of green space with a number of parks, especially Confluence Park and Commons Park. It’s a great place to watch some dogs play or kayakers make their way down the South Platte (and maybe dip into REI to pick up some gear.)

If your office is in Downtown Denver, you may feel stuck with the charming characters of the 16th Street Mall. But the Cherry Creek Path is just a few blocks from most of downtown and offers a spacious area to stroll with new additions — murals by local artists. If you’re toward the Capitol edge of downtown, you could also explore the Sculpture Park near the DCPA or Civic Center Park.
