If you had asked members of the 1986 University of Colorado Buffaloes football team which of them would go on to have the biggest impact on the world of sports, no one would have nominated their third-string punter, Hank Adams.

But the freshman benchwarmer has surprised them all. Now 45, Mr. Adams is CEO of Sportvision Inc., the company responsible for such broadcast innovations as the “glowing puck” for the NHL, the yellow “first and 10” line during NFL broadcasts, pitch and strike-zone tracking in major league baseball and “RACEf/x” for Nascar, which makes race cars easier to follow on television.
