Aerospace is an important sector of the German economy because it contributes to a number of other industries. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, aerospace development has influenced mobile tech, navigation, automobile technology and climate research while providing immense benefits to civil and defense initiatives. Below are some of the top companies in German aerospace to know.

Isar Aerospace is relatively new in the industry but it’s doing impressive work creating new rocket technology. It develops new-age rockets for small and medium satellites that use lightweight carbon structures and non-toxic propellants. Despite its age, Isar Aerospace already has partnerships with the French space agency, CNES.

 

Lufthansa is one of Europe’s largest airlines and aviation companies. The Cologne-based corporation and has a wide variety of operations. It provides everything from international flights to load control services and airline consulting. 

 

The German Aerospace Center is a national space agency, employing over 10,000 people. The agency operates across 30 locations and is responsible for implementing Germany’s space program. It is also responsible for conducting various aeronautics, energy and transportation research.

 

Munich-based MTU Aero Engines designs, develops and markets commercial and military aircraft engines. For its commercial endeavors, the company partners with other engine developers like General Electric and Rolls-Royce to develop new engine categories and technologies. For its military partners, MTU develops engines for helicopters, fighters and transport engines.

 

FEV Group is a large hardware and software developer that produces aerospace and engine propulsion products. The company focuses heavily on green aerospace development, and many of its products are alternatives to combustion technology. FEV’s aerospace offerings include fuel cell development, hydrogen combustion and sustainable fuels.

 

H3 Dynamics aims to advance the future of flight through its hydrogen solutions for airports, aircraft and drone OEMs, as well as its intelligent maintenance and security solutions. In 2023, the company announced that, with support from Hamburg Invest’s Scaleup Landing Pad program, the company would launch a Hamburg location, strengthening its presence in Germany. This would mark its fourth location, joining Singapore, Toulouse, and Austin, Texas.

 

ST Engineering is a multinational defense and engineering company that addresses challenges in industries such as aerospace and public security through solutions like aircraft maintenance. The company operates multiple facilities in Germany, including locations in Dresden, Kidersdoft and Frankfurt.

 

Airbus is a designer and manufacturer of aeronautics, space and related services, offering a range of passenger airliners, tankers and mission aircrafts, according to the company. With 10 offices worldwide and 130,000 employees, Airbus reported a revenue of €49 billion in 2020.

 

Headquartered near Berlin, Rolls-Royce Deutschland is Germany’s only fully certified engine manufacturer with capabilities for modern civil and military jet engines, according to the company. The site is certified for the development, manufacturing and testing of medium and small engines. 

 

Based in Baden-Württemberg, Volocopter’s mission is to improve the lives of city dwellers by offering a new mode of transportation: the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOL. The company claims that this technology provides a quieter and more sustainable means of transport, such as for emergency rescue services.
