Description
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to [specific location where employee is expected to report] three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
The Role
The Value Added Assembler & Materials Planning Manager will focus on VAA Execution and Material Planning Strategies. This role requires a unique blend of skills to develop and execute General Assembly lean material planning strategies in earlier stages of development and work with the VAA suppliers to promote flawless launches. Individual will work to ensure lessons learned from previous VAA launches drives continuous improvement of the existing processes as well as shared with both GM assembly plant VAA teams.
What You Will Do (Responsibilities)
• Lead the strategy and development of the General Assembly Material ecosystem plan, aligning lean strategies, optimization and efforts with overall business goals.
• Conduct market research and competitor analysis to identify trends and opportunities for material strategies.
• Analyze current material usage and production processes to identify areas for improvement which includes outside and onsite LOCs.
• Develop and evaluate estimates and advanced studies, considering cost, ROI, and impact on workforce.
• Connect the dots with the GA Material Execution manager to identify continuous improvement
• Respond to the Manufacturing Planning Studies timely and efficiently
• Work with the Manufacturing Integration Manager and GPSC to define and nominate VAA Suppliers timely
• Active participation in off-site and on-site build events during all phases of the launch process from IVER thru tooling install and MVB events. Escalate when the VAA performance is behind expectation and implement forecast recovery plans with regular updates.
• Leads the VAA launch activities from support with Plant personnel and General Assembly Manufacturing Eng`g resources
• Establish and keep a transparent and strong partnership with the VAA Suppliers, Coordinates quality planning and plant quality interface to holds VAA accountable for reaching agreed upon targets
• Oversee the procurement, inventory management, and distribution of materials.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities through material sourcing, negotiation, and waste reduction.
• Develop strategies to ensure material quality and compliance with regulations.
• Implement systems for tracking material usage and forecasting future needs.
• Confirm thru VAA process reviews Standardized Work "Job Instructions" are complete with effective job loading (Drive Efficiency).
• Develop and implement procedures to implement a VAA CORE Team structure including establishing a Process and Assessment for Operation Readiness that supports GMS-Next and BIQS deliverables.
• Develop, coach, and teach the GM VAA Launch Lead and VAA Quality Engineer on how to effectively build the relationship needed for a flawless launch of the VAA.
• Lead the selection, implementation, and integration of automation technologies.
• Manage budgets and timelines for automation projects.
• Develop and implement a VAA Continuous Improvement process that drive initiatives to improve execution and/or system improvements at the VAA or within the GM assembly plant team supporting the VAA.
• Ensure the Engineering Change process flow is working with effective communication from the Vehicle Systems ME to the VAA and feedback is received timely so the 3rd Party Manager can complete scope change documentation properly.
• Ensure VAA runs understand how to execute a mini Plant Issue Team (PIT) for the VAA assemblies to confirm first 3 diamonds are completed timely.
• Review/Investigate Major Quality Defects at VAA escalation to SQ&D when needed to resolve issue
• Implement Operation Readiness tools in all functions of VAA (assembly, maintenance, material, and quality). Should include: Station Layout, Error Proofing, and Operator (JIT) Certification
• Participates in RV Checklist Reviews with the Vehicle Systems ME. Provide leadership and roadblock breaking support that ensures correct actions and outcomes are achieved timely
• Support Manufacturing Integration Manager with integration of the VAA into the GM PQRR and MQRR Launch deliverables, Launch Meetings and Issue Resolution Meetings. Provide leadership and roadblock busting when VAA team is not supporting appropriately.
Additional Description
Your Skills And Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 7+ years of experience in VAA/Materials engineering
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Project management expertise.
  • Knowledge of automation technologies (e.g., robotics, process automation software) and lean manufacturing principles.
