A Better Opportunity


Better is looking for an Underwriting Credit Strategy Analyst to join our growing team! Credit Strategy is responsible for managing credit policy end to end; this includes documenting, communicating, and providing training and resources to create a deep credit knowledge. As an Underwriting Credit Strategy Analyst, it will be your responsibility to facilitate the operationalization of new products and programs in underwriting, to ensure that stakeholders are able to perform job functions and adhere to credit policy, to create operational efficiencies through process and policy improvements along with increasing quality in loan manufacturing and investor delivery, and maintain current underwriting guidelines and policies . You will have the opportunity to wear many hats, ranging from a visionary redesigning the needlessly complex mortgage process; a data analyst uncovering how to make the most impact; to a problem solver working with highly skilled engineers and industry experts to resolve technical and operational challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a solid understanding of all product and investor guidelines serving as a subject matter expert
  • Update and maintain product guidelines and policies within Better’s internal Underwriting Resource Guide
  • Create reference materials, job aids, and presentations as our investors and products diversify and change
  • Perform thorough analysis of applicant's income, expenses, assets, credit reports, property valuations, loan conditions, and underwriter decision to complete second level reviews and recommend approval of individual underwriter’s lending authority
  • Provide risk opinions and support to management, underwriting, coordination, andsales answering questions and assisting with escalations
  • Work cross functionally with product development, compliance, legal, coordination, sales, and origination teams to help create and improve workflows and processes within our loan origination system
  • Perform data analysis and loan audits providing actionable feedback and responses to internal stakeholders and applicable regulatory agencies
  • Develop and present training materials to support product launches, policy clarifications, and assist in underwriting new hire onboarding

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience underwriting FNMA and FHLMC mortgages or in credit policy (combination of the two is acceptable)
  • Experience in credit policy highly recommended but not required
  • Expert knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU), Loan Prospector/Loan Product Advisor (LP/LPA), and product guidelines (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA)
  • VA, FHA, Non-Conforming & HELOC experience
  • Categorical understanding of the mortgage lending process
  • Sound problem solving skills
  • Capable of preparing findings reports
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand and explain guidelines
  • Proven ability to thrive in a remote setting
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Perform well in team environments
  • Ability to work well in a high pressure, fast paced environment
