YMCA Camp Classen in Davis, Oklahoma is looking for equestrian staff. Positions are seasonal and open for weekday, weekends, and summer staff. Applicants should be proficient in haltering, grooming, saddling, and bridling horses. Applicants will primarily be taking guests on short trail rides. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
To assist with the various aspects of summer camp and/or weekend trail rides, horse care and maintenance of the equestrian areas as well as other camp areas.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must stay current in CPRPR/AED/O2 and First Aid, renewed annually.
- Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire and renewed annually.
- Assist in the care of 30 plus horses used for weekend trail rides as well as horses pastured and not used on the weekends.
- Responsible for daily feedings, able to lift, carry and distribute a 50-pound bag of feed, watering, observing general health and wellbeing of the horses, administering any necessary medication, caring for injuries as needed.
- Maintain tack in a clean, safe state of repair.
- Groom and tack up horses for trail rides.
- Maintain and keep the stables and surrounding areas clean.
- Responsible for following safety procedures and instruct participants to do the same.
- Lead trail rides.
- Provide basic instruction to trail ride participants on riding and safety while on the trail.
- Perform other functions as directed for the good of the camp and the participants.
- Teach arena riding lessons to summer campers.
- May be required to stay in cabin with campers during summer camp.
- Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors and volunteers.
Requirements
- Must be certified in PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid. (Training provided by the Y, if needed)
- Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) certificate is recommended, not required.
Skills Required
- Current CPR/PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid certification (renewed annually)
- Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire (renewed annually)
- Proficiency in haltering, grooming, saddling, and bridling horses
- Ability to lift, carry, and distribute 50-pound bags of feed
- Ability to water, observe general health, administer medication, and care for equine injuries as needed
- Maintain tack and stable areas in a clean, safe state of repair
- Lead trail rides and provide basic riding and safety instruction to participants
- Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) certificate
